Hi all,
Had the S out yesterday on a bit of a run and after about 45 mins she became sluggish and had difficulty pulling away and when accelerating.
I pulled over and tried revving the engine without any load and all it would do is misfire and pop.
After cooling down for a few minutes all was well again for about 15 mins and then the problem returned. This happened repeatedly.
My initial thoughts are a failing coil or amplifier.
Anyone had this problem?
Any other ideas?

Help!

I had a very similar problem to this a couple of years ago , I initially thought it was the coil breaking down , I had a spare set of new leads and changed them on the off chance .....cured the issue and the old coil is still fitted and running strong ..
Good luck

Ignition amplifier is often the culprit with these symptoms and there are lots of threads about this. TBH though, it could be all sorts of things, even just a loose wire. Another serial offender. Good luck tracing it.

I had very similar issues with mine last year not long after I bought it. The previous owner had obviously had the same problem, but failed to mention it when I was buying the car, as he had changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap, TPS, idle control valve and lots of other things. A new coil completely transformed it and no issues since.

Or the hoses, an air leak there will give all sorts of weird running issues, although that doesn't particularly relate to the hot/cold thing?

Check under the bonnet when it is dark should give an indication of any ht leaks.

I had this a few years ago returning home from S club heaven, 5 miles from home the car finally conked out. It turned out to be the coil, i fitted a new coil, and mounted it on top of the passenger footwell to keep it away from the heat generated by the engine and exhausts.

I had it when I picked up Samy. Drove faultlessly from Edinburgh until around Liecester. Then started missing. Got to a services and the king lead to the dist cap was not fitted right. Easy fix!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I think a new coil and move it to the bulkhead will be my first move.

I had same problem before with the coil. Drove it until problem started happening then cooled coil down with couple bags of frozen peas and problem would go. Changed out coil and moved it to the bulkhead, one of the air duct hoses that i was going to remove is now cut and positioned at coil to keep it cool during drives. no problems so far and at least the useless air duct has a purpose now.
