AMG GT-S.....are they still good news in terms of residuals?
Discussion
No.
As someone who bought and sold one, definitely not. Loved the car (light steering aside, which I could never get used to) but it was a residual disaster. I've had a few painful experiences, and I accept that I burn through cars quite rapidly, but the GT-S was one of the worst. Sorry, probably not what you want to hear - buy the car for the car and not for any kind of financial sensibility!
Is it worse than an equivalent 911? Is suspect not, but then I probably wouldn't have bought a 911 brand spanking new.

Following the same value cycle as the SLS when they were first launched - a massive build up to launch meant they had a good order bank, but actual customers couldn't get hold of them as the speculators jumped in first; then the 'mandatory' demos all hit the market 3 months after launch at reasonable discounts to release funds for the dealer and create another reg opportunity.
I think once the hype dies down a bit and there are less sat in dealer showrooms the residuals will stiffen up - probably not to the extent of the SLS, as that's almost in supercar territory, helped by its presence; but they will settle at a 'sensible' figure.
If you intend to buy it and run it for a couple of years I would say it's a safer bet in terms of value than pretty much all of its competitors.

That's a shame but probably what I anticipated.
Had my first proper look at one yesterday and kinda liked it and in comparison to an SLS it looked like real value.
It is a tremendous car, so much more charismatic than much of the competition. It's rare too, but you really do need to see the volume on sale to see the scale of the problem. There's cars for sale today that were on sale last summer, and thats not a good thing. Buy used, and buy well and you'll be fine. It's the early adopters like me who bought new and high that paid the price - real customers (as Matc put it) who couldn't get their car for months after it was launched due to the f*cking speculators putting theirs for sale immediately.....but I'm not bitter

This.

And I'm very impressed.
Never been an Audi man and I avoided an R8 for a very long time but I drove a mates Gen-1 18 months ago and was taken aback at how good it actually was. I had the SLS at the time and I'd just driven it to my mates house in Germany. Driving the R8 back to back really showed how much more tightly developed it felt than the SLS. Not really a fair comparison and the SLS was by far the more luxurious, but when the GT eventually arrived, the drive of that R8 a year earlier was the GT's ultimate downfall because it was gnawing away at me how good this posh Veedub was!
I intended buying a very late Gen-1 R8 LMX but when I drove one over here, I couldn't get on with the bucket seats and the driving position wasn't great in the conversion to RHD. I tried a Gen-2 which corrected all that, and then added what has to be one of the most contemporary and best built interiors out there. And the rest is history - I've had it three months now, done nearly 5k miles (normally almost time to change lol) and it still feels very special.
The irony is, despite never being an Audi man I've gone and bought two! I've done most of BMW and Mercedes and it felt like time for a change so got the girlfriend this. I'm not as impressed with it as I am the R8, and in some respects it confirms why I stayed away from Audi's (in particular the suspension is not great, far too wooden). But much like the R8, the drivetrain is world class - magnificent motorsport-like engine (and an 8.5k redline) and a tremendous transmission. Looks well too, certainly enough to justify buying an estate!

There's a simple formula I live by 'Buy right, sell right'.....I managed to purchase one of these fabulous AMG GTS as an ex-demo for a decent discount on new and personally, I reckon it will still be worth what I paid in 12 months. If I'm wrong it will be close to what I paid...and I won't lose much. But that, to be honest is a bonus. This car is bl**dy superb. Not like anything I've had before and probably will ever own after. Can't think why I shouldn't keep it for 'ever'.
As has been said - buy the car for the car. It is incredible.
Regards, Brin
