A6 Avant 2.5TDI, what to look out for?
Discussion
Hi there,
My everyday work car is about to bite the dust I think due to terminal rust, and I was thinking about replacing it with this

Are there any issues that I should look out for with this model? I would be using it for a 26 mile each way commute, 25 of which are on the motorway, and for carrying my mountain bikes/snowboards on days off. I'm not to clued up on this A6 or engine, as I've previously only had A4's and 2 lovely A8's.
Any advice welcome,
Thanks

When they are fault free they are great but...
The Bosch VP44 fuel pumps fitted to them are a ticking timebomb of expense for when they go wrong, and they do. They also have a reputation for camshaft wear.
You would be better off getting one with the 1.9 PD TDI and get it cheaply mapped up to the power and torque of the 2.5 not that that is strictly necessary.

To give a balanced view..
I bought a FWD A6 with that engine chipped to about 180bhp at 75K.
Took it all the way to just under 250K when the gearbox decided to let go (CVT unit)
Apart from the gearbox issues, it was faultless.
The 2.5 TDI is a peach of an engine, smooth and torquey
The engine needs to be serviced properly and you will have no issues
