Yet again. And yes, this is a repeating cycling of whinging about a certain brand from me. There has been loads of positive press about the new Schwalbe Pro 1, fast rolling, bulletproof, amazing comfort blah, blah, blah. To cut a long story short a pair of these were bundled with the Hunt wheels (which are still solid) and I put my previous experience with the delaminating sidewalls and mega cuts to one side and can offer you all a totally up to date review of their new flagship road tubeless tyre.

Less grip than Conti 4 Seasons, way less that 4000's. A single puncture has written the rear off, tried patching, no joy. This am have a second puncture on the front which sealant will not deal with, this needs patching, fk that it'll go in the bin. Ride quality I honestly haven't noticed a difference vs 28c anything else, maybe if you run them at 60-80 psi but this risks scraping them when they hit anything.

Obviously one person's favorite another's sthouse, but really, Schwalbe are just really scabby tyres.

Back to Conti, Vittoria and these things called inner tubes for moi. Road tubeless is just a solution to a problem that doesn't exist IMO.

really?

used Schwalbe for years, the only big blow out I had was when I mashed into a kerb at 25mph and blew the tyre.

a phrase that could be used to describe a number of cycling's recent 'innovations'...

Very useful. Thanks for posting.

I had been considering trying these myself. Shall stick with my 4000Sii instead. thumbup

I made the deviation from Conti to Schwalbe two or three years ago for a brief period - big mistake! Quite possibly the most useless tyre you can buy. Back to Contis now and staying there.

Yes. I had a pair of Ultremo DD's a few years ago, again highly regarded by the press. They cut up quite a bit and then threads started falling out of the sidewall. In their defence they did grip and turn well but given the lifespan of the sidewall (2000 miles) and their label as a tough tyre they were disappointing. These are worse though. I hate feeling the front slide, the only other tyre that did anything like these before were Gatorskins, we all know how good they are smile

I have just removed 25mm GP4ks which were run all year round.

These have been replaced with these to give them a try,

http://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/road-tyres...

Malcolm couldn't source Schwable and has supplied and run these tubeless tyres. I will let you know how I get on, first 60km ride on various quality surfaces went ok.

I will decrease tyre pressure incrementally until I find a sweet spot.

To give this discussion some balance a chap from work runs tubeless on all his road, cx and MTB for the last 8 years and doesn't even take spare sealant or a tube with him now. I will embrace the technology and see how I get on.

I've run various tubeless with ZTR's on the MTB and have had great results.

On a side issue how did you find Malcolm's wheels, assuming you've had him build some?

Very good SL23s on DuraAce hubs, Malcom tends to prefer hubs which are more service friendly. Having just shelled out £150 on a new DA freehub I will be more careful in running those wheels over winter.

Probably more due to the fact I degrease the chain with the rear wheel and cassette on the bike, the mechanic in my lbs probably could have left the old one but it "didn't purr, did it"!

I think if I purge some new grease through the old one it will be fine. Wheels have been ridden pretty hard for 5k km and are still true having taken some big hits in a few potholes.

I am talking to him about his 50mm Carbon wheels, he has a demo set of the new tubeless rims on Miche hubs that aparentky love bad weather. They are a keen price or I can get the same clincher rims built into DA or White Industries hubs for £900-1000. Other option is drc wheels equivalent on his hubs for £660, there is then scope creep to Knight 65's on drc hubs for £1330.

In summary great wheels from Malcolm with a great warranty. For his carbon rims he has never had one back, replacement rim is £200 with free rebuild.

How much faster are Knight 65's then unbranded 50mm rims........10-30s over 40km? Who knows!

I ran the irc mythos on my old trek 4500, great XC tyre.

a very very forgiving tyre.

Really.... I'd nominate Specialized as the most useless tyre I have ever purchased.

I made a deviation from Conti to Specialized 18 months ago for a very brief period - big mistake. The tyres lasted about 300 miles before they were worn out and needed binning.

I had a similar problem with Schwalbe One (clinchers not tubeless) last summer.

The first blew spectacularly after about 70 miles - a massive, unrepairable gash in the sidewall about 30 miles from home which meant I needed to rely on wife taxi. The replacement lasted less than 100 miles - I stopped to repair yet another puncture and spotted that a 5p sized bit of rubber had come off the centre of the tyre so no wonder I had got a puncture.

I nursed it home, bought some Gatorskins and through the remains of the Schwalbe Ones in the bin - three tyres in less than 200 miles. The Gatorskins are a pig to get on, but I'm not had a puncture in the 1,000 miles or so since then.

Schwalbe UK's response when I complained? Apparently it was all my fault for buying a racing tyre.

I didn't even bother with a complaint, I know what would happen and can't be bothered. The thing is I have put all my tyres through the same sort of terrain and with the 4 seasons, when they were really worn out I just took the piss with them on gravel and dirt tracks. Even then they just cut a little, never flatted. I always check the tyre before rides and pick any flints out, I try and do what I can. This will be the last set I ever use, even for free or bundled with a build I will rip them off and sell/bin them. I patched the front tyre last night and put loads of Stan's in there, fingers crossed. On the way are a pair of GP4000's in 28c, that should liven things up a little and put an end to this BS.

My first pair of GP4ks bought in 2013/4 lasted about 200km each, I swore never to buy them again. 2 year later the next pair I bought did about 4000 km with 2 punctures.

Specialised Armadillos were great, no punctures but cornering speeds and wet weather riding required reduced speeds. There Turbo race tyre lasted about 150km with 3 punctures on one tyre, they are still in the garage and will probably never be used again, just don't trust them. Then again they would probably be fine for Tenerife or Lanzarote's better roads which are very clean.

I've had Schwalbe one tubeless tyres on for about a year now and have been really impressed with them. covered over 2000 miles without a single issue and they ride very well

Do you chaps running tubeless find you get significant pressure drop? I lost 10 and 30 psi between Saturday and today.

30 sounds excessive? I had about 10 PSI over a few days.

I think "Schwalbe" is German for "Utter st" If it's not the Ultremo DDs unravelling and delaminating like mine, it's the older Ultremo R1s failing sidewalls becoming so frequent, Schwalbe themselves acknowledged it as an issue and replaced without any questions. The funny bit being of course that you ended up with another pair of Ultremos and the same failing sidewalls...

I've run Hutchinson Secteur 28's tubeless for the last 1500kms and they've been great. Great grip, have seen evidence of what would have been 2 punctures that weren't and really comfortable on the cobbles/pave here in the Netherlands. These are on my general do it all/commuting wheels.

I've a nicer set of wheels which I was hoping to put Schwalbe Pro One 25's on , which are on back order. But the stories here are somewhat concerning.... Having got so use to tubeless on the MTB and now the road bike, I had to put on some GP4k's for riding in Spain a couple of weeks ago on the nice wheels, which are much more forgiving/comfortable, but having to run tubed tyres again reminded it's not solely about the convenience....
