Hi guys. I have recently acquired a 2010 golf 2.0 tdi 140. After having PD engined cars previously I appreciate the refinement of the newer engine but really miss the low down torque. I find 6th useless unless on the motorway and use 4th on most A roads just to get more response from the engine - not wafty and relaxing like my previous mapped 130 PD.

I am wondering/hoping that a remap will make a significant difference to this. Has anyone had a relatable experience? How much more flexible are mapped CR cars?

Having had 7 Octavia estate diesels, 3 with 2.0 power, 1 PD and 2 CR I have not noticed any lack of low down torque, the engine will pull 6th gear happily from around 40mph. Not sure why you think there is an issue?

It should be punchy enough at stock. I owned one in between a Mk5 GTI and Mk7 GTD and didn't find it particularly lacking. Drive it like a petrol.

I know what you mean OP. I've had a a PD100 (Golf) and 2 x 170 CRs (Leon and an Exeo).

The PD was punchy and lacking at higher revs. The CR's are smooth and don't feel as punchy but of course are much quicker in my scenario (extra 70hp!), however I do note the CR's drive more like petrols and will rev freely with a wider power band*. Once you get adapted your 140 will feel better to you but a remap will take it up to 180ish horses, maybe wait and get used to it and if it isn't pushing the buttons get it remapped.

  • I do sometimes drop back to 5th on the motorway to gain decent acceleration and I find 3rd particularly flexible (20 - 80mph no problem with pretty linear acceleration come 35mph +). I would never drive the PD like that as it was more lazy in it's delivery.

I think the longer ratios are taking some getting used to. 4th gear at 50mph is still under 2000rpm. It definitely won't be doing much acceleration at 40mph in 6th! Interestingly though my parents have a 2010 Skoda Scout with the same(?) CR engine and it seems to pick up much better at low speeds...

Would a remap have the potential to change the characteristics of the power delivery? ie. Can peak torque be shifted lower down the rev band?

You will get better response from a remap, the torque will "come in " better.
I have the 170 and I've done quite a lot to it now but when I had the original turbo it would happily pull from 50 in 6th.

I'd recommend Revo for a remap on these engines, they are good and of course have nationwide dealer support.
If you are down towards the South I can point you in the direction of a chap who does wonders on these engines.
