Online Press Release Distribution - PRWeb etc.
Discussion
What are you looking to get out of the press release? PRWeb was only ever really used to get links to your site and never got the attention of real journalists etc.
If you want to get coverage on news sites and in papers then you've got to work out the ones you want to be in and talk to them individually. No real short cuts here unless you pay a PR company.

Thanks for replying Andrew. I am (was) working with the view that journalists browse PRWeb looking for something interesting in their sector, or are presented with those items automatically by PRWeb.
My market sector is home improvement and automotive so there are just too many magazines to approach individually. I did try it a few years ago and found very time consuming, and a lot of the time you get no feedback as to whether or not anything was published.
I wouldn't mind paying a PR company if I could find the right one at reasonable cost.

Well done. So if you really want to go with PRWeb, go for it and ignore everything everyone else is saying - makes little difference to me
Where you might want to try and get to is being included for thoughts and opinions because they tie you more to the actual news stories being covered rather than someone trying to fill space and looking for a newsworthy story
In many cases, press releases aren't newsworthy stories so they just get thrown out by prnewswire and if people read them then they read them. They're not focus activities and they don't tend to generate much feedback other than for companies themselves to retweet to their 206 followers.
You can do better without scattergunning and that's what press and public appreciate more

We've used a few services including those mentioned thus far, ultimately to get anything published you need the publication to have a reason to want to mention you and your product.
This will generally because a) they are doing a feature on your product/sector, b) your product/service is new, unique and completely stands out c) you've placed a significant media buy, d) they are short of content for the week/month.
Taking all this on-board you'll ultimately need to employ a PR agency or dedicate a lot of time in contacting publications to persuade them to run something.

There are loads of freelance PR people on peopleperhour.com
Prices and service levels vary quite a bit but they all have feedback ratings and examples of their work. I'm going to be giving someone a go from this site when I launch a new website/brand. I'm not expecting miracles but I'm hoping that the press release will get picked up by some relevant blogs.
