Lotus ownders,

Have been having a few minor cooling water leaks from my '90 Turbo. When I got the car the checks stated that water pump seal is weeping -check in 1000k's. The mechanic said the car had not been driven much in the last 12 months so I thought it might take up with some regular use. It occasionally has been leaking (comes from centre of car just in front of back wheels from a triangular 300mm size open section). Cant get under to look further. I refill with approx 1L every week (for about 2 months).

Couple of questions;

1. Have been topping up with fresh water, will add some antifreeze-boil to it now that the leak is a bit more noticeable. Is there a preferred type or should I ensure I use the same as currently in the car.

2. Is this likely to be the water pump seal ?.

On other issues;

3. The car currently has Pennzoil Multi VIS 20W50 SJ/Cf enginer oil. Is this the preferred. I live in Aussie can rarely below 0degC.

4. Preferred gearbox oil ??

I need to get a Maintenance Manual, have seen some of the sites, is the general '87? to '91 manual really applicable for a 90 Turbo ?.

thanks

jason

P.S. Love my car

Jason,
If the pump is leaking from the weep hole it is probably the pump bearing.

Always top up with regular mixed 50/50 antifreeze. Even if the temp does not go below freezing it contains anti corrosion and lubricating componds in the antifreeze. Check the chargecooler levels too.

Just about everyone in the USA uses either Mobil1 15/50 or Castrol Syntec 5/50 for added protection not for the viscosity but because they are better synthetic oils.

Use the listed gear box oil or many in the USA have switched to Redline MT-90. Be carefull of what you put in. Don't use gearbox oils that are harmfull to the syncros.

The correct manual for your car should be 88-92 service notes and it is recomended that you use it in conjunction with the 88-92 parts list with exploded views.

A fellow Esprit owner in Aussie land is Graham Smith. You may meet up with him one day. Very knowledgeable about Esprit's.
