Omega Speedmaster Advice
Discussion
I have been looking at new and used Omega Speedmaster Professional watches fr the past few weeks and what has struck me is the vast array of variants available over the years. Cosmetically I know what I like, but mechanically not so much. I really wanted to know what I should be looking out for and if when buying used what I need to know and be aware of? I appreciate it isnt the rarest or most expensive watch discussed here but any help is appreciated!
With regards to the 'look' im after something along these lines with a black leather strap, year isnt too important:

Just get a boggo moonwatch (handwound, plexi glass crystal) and stick it on the leather strap of your choice, is my advice as you're just after the look.
A bracelet will help resale value, but if you're sure you'll never sell, drive a hard bargain on one without it.
A reduced auto would save you some money, but I've a feeling the lugs are an odd size on that (and it's not the 'proper' moon watch, which would always niggle me, but maybe not you)

If you can live with a manual, I'd pick the classic Speedmaster Professional on a bracelet and fit my own strap. The Lemania movement's great, parts have been available for so long that there's plenty available should you ever need it serviced. Only downside is the plexi crystal might get scratched but they can be polished and replaced at service should you so desire. It's just a great watch, like buying a classic vintage piece with only a couple of years wear!
The automatic reduced tripledate, etc (non coaxial) are cheaper used, 7750 based and possibly more dressy (unless you buy a Schumacher model!). They'll never be the classic the original is, but I quite liked the smaller solid size of mine when I had it, and again, parts shouldn't be a massive problem regardless of what Swatch Group get up to.
Additionally if buying a Speedy Pro or 7750 model and you have a good trusted used seller, then you may as well buy a mint used one- there's not much difference in the past ten years models, so no need to take the depreciation.
That said, I really like the Solar Impulse.

I know this doesn't meet any of your criteria but........ In the tradition of piston heads can I suggest something different?
I went through the process of bidding on Planet Oceans and it seams that in January they go considerably cheaper than any other time of the year and I missed the boat. I turned to Speedmasters because they were less in fashion. But, I like you, was confused by the number of variants.
Then, I stumbled upon the IWC GST 3707.

I fancy a Speedmaster next too. I also really like the look of them on a leather or fabric NATO. What's entry level pricing for a second hand one? I'm not too fussed on the exact model but prefer the larger case sizes and black face/bezel. What model(s)should I be looking at (sorry to hijack a little, I think I'm after something similar to the OP!).
If you fancy auto, and something a little bit less common something like this?:

Much less of them about if you like the look.
