Sad news, confirmed on his website just now.

One of the best players I have ever seen and will be remembered as a true legend by every football fan. Didn't even make 70 years old....

Very sad loss. What a great player he was, truly a great, even while smoking like a chimney! Old school.

Very sad news frown

I wish that I'd seen him play at his peak but I'm too young. Some of the footage of him from the 70s with the Dutch team is unbelievable!

A real shame, he was the standout player in a team of very good players. They made the WC final twice in a row in the 70s, but fell at the final hurdle. I suspect because after a month together they'd all fallen out with each other and no one was talking!

Great players, but the Dutch rarely have a harmonious camp!

Bad times. He was some player. Probly in the top half dozen ever to kick a ball.

I remember the 74 World Cup, he lit up that tournament, shame he didn't win it.

RIP.

Sad loss, a football legend passed away.

I think this reaction I read earlier sums it up well:

"It's debatable who's the greatest player of all time, whether it be Pele, Maradona or Messi but there surely is no doubt on who had the greatest impact on football and that is Johan Cruyff. He was not only influential as a player, a coach and manager but also with his philosophy in shaping football through his time at Ajax, Barcelona and the Dutch national team."

Very sad news. He was so well respected in Barcelona that even today, they still talk of him alongside Messi and others. Amazing player. RIP

Very sad to hear this.

I remember very well summer '74 and every kid and his dog trying to replicate 'that' turn...

A very sad day.
The word legend is so overused these days.
This guy was a true legend.
Remember watching the '74 World Cup and the great Dutch side. Really changed the way teams played the great game.
