new career in your free time

im in the fortunate position that my job pays me pretty well and working shifts leaves me with plenty of days off. even so, im considering learning a new skill to earn some more money on my days off. has anyone done something similar? any good suggestions on what i should look into? i was thinking along the lines of plumbing, carpentry etc, but i am open to any suggestions

Cant really help but I am in a similar position. I finish work early and have a lot of spare time to use. More a case of filling empty time when kids and wife aren't around.

Only comment to OP is consider if whatever it is ties you to specific times. I looked at working for a local co. but the commitment means I would lose the flexibility in my current/main role.

Best I've come up with is teaching things I enjoy as a hobby as evening classes. I did this for a year and had a great time, its social, passing on skills and actually paid quite well considering it was only a few, literally, 4-5 hours a week. The FTE is about £28K a year without any aggro.

Prob. is that this is a couple of evenings 7-9 which I quite enjoy at home. I'd rather find something I can do before 5pm.

As the second poster has touched upon, it may be more efficient to do something around your primary skill; what is it that you currently do? Could you teach/mentor/volunteer around this primary skill?

If you do want to do something completely different and money is not the driver, then volunteering could help others. If money is the driver, look at what is scarce in your area and see if you can do that.

im an aircraft engineer. i cant see how i could use exactly that to teach in my spare time, but there are certainly transferable skills

whilst money isnt exactly the driver, it is an influence. i'd like to have another talent/profession if i ever decide i've had enough of planes
