Unusual on a 111S - doesnt it have an extra electric recirc pump?

This tiny 10W pump won't do much. On top of this it is only activated during rather extreme situations.
Fit a Craig Davis EWP80 or 115 plus controller in the main coolant circuit and it does what it should.

The head tuning soft is only one of the HG failure modes.

I don't think the 111S has significantly less tendency to suffer from head gasket failure than any other K-series engined Elise? Mine has certainly gone in the past.
