So stuck in £30 of fuel tonight (well my wife has) and the petrol gauge hasn't shifted from the empty warning light.

Any ideas? Bit annoyed tbh if it needs replacing any ideas of cost?

Yep, only works from about half a tank upwards. Below that is based on maths, which only works on the way down!

Absolutely unbelieveable really.

On the 4wd cars the sender unit only measures the top half of the fuel tank; the remainder of the fuel display is calculated using an algorithm that takes into account throttle position, run time, speed and other variables. If the battery is disconnected or <30l of fuel is put into an empty tank the sender isn't moved. The sender has to react to a fuel level to be able to give a reading.

That is nuts. Anyway thanks for the advice - I will fill her up in the morning. I don't normally go below half a tank if I can help it

One of the little idiosyncracies! The fuel tank is horseshoe shaped to go over the front diff- hence why the fuel guage can't measure the whole tank

It's because of RHD.

It's shaped like a saddle which canted to one side. The top part (on the horse's back) contains the sender, which works as though the side part does not exist. Or two thirds of a horseshoe to use the earlier analogy.

The fuel pump has pick up pipes in both the lower part (the horse's flank) and the upper part.
