Well FRAM ph2821a on the flea are now £9-£10, and even from chandlers they are around £6-50.

Anyone still getting them at a reasonable price? It seems to have doubled over the past few years.

Also the price of engine oil has wound me up - anyone notice it shot up a few years ago following the oil price, and now the oil price is half (so the feedstocks to the chemical industry are half) it's not come down - in fact it's still going up!

Over here we live in the land of no inflation. Things cost more because their are 'better' or cost the same because the quality has been reduced. So things like refrigerators were/are known as "durable goods" because they lasted. Now they barely live past the warranty period and are frequently deemed as non-reparable. We had to bin a 6 year old freezer for goodness sake.

And the price of windshield squitter fluid (95%+ water, a tad of blue color and a bit of something else) has doubled.

Sorry - one of my pet peeves; post something about the official unemployment rate and I'll launch again! rolleyes Grady

I used to own a car spares shop and was a member of a major automotive wholesaler. It's like a huge supermarket for car products. The mark up on service items such as oil filters, brake linings etc are around 100 percent. Not to mention accessories, oils etc. My membership has ran out, but I could renew it free of charge. The only problem is, they have a minimum purchase price of several hundred pounds. If there were enough takers of service items etc. a purchase could be organised several times a year to benefit wedge owners including myself. Trust me, it's an Aladins cave of car items at prices that cannot be bought anywhere outside by the public. Would there be enough interest? and how could it be organised? I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by mentioning this because it wouldn't be organised for financial gain but just to benefit owners from paying high retail prices for items we regularly need. It's just a sugestion.

Seems like a great idea Tony, I tend to buy consumables in bulk when I can get it cheap and would be up for a hundred pounds worth of oil, plus filters, some set s of spark plugs, a few gallons of antifreeze etc. So I'd probably top £200 on my own.

Sounds like a cash'n'carry for auto stuff. Presumably it's in London?

For instance I saw some clearance Redex fuel treatment for a pound each - so I cleared the shelf. And I am almost down to my last 2l bottle of ATF which I got for £1-50 each so I bought ten!

I too need oils and filters and polishes and things, so we might make the minimum purchase just between the the two of us. Yes, it is a cash and carry and it's in London not too far from me, but I can't mention the name on the forum. If I manage to renew my membership, and I see no reason why not, the two of us could take a trip up there for the first purchase. They only allow two people in at one time anyway. You'll be amazed at the stock that's kept there. It makes Halfrauds look like a corner shop. I'll get on the case over the next few days.

Since you have an RV8, it is well worth considering V8F 8990 synthetic filter as supplied by David Brown, as long as you are not too price sensitive. Although the main website is down you can still read about the filters here

He may contribute to this thread in which case you will have an easy way to contact him, otherwise PM me and I will share his email, but I do not feel comfortable posting it on a public forum.

Well that one looks to be about 18-20 quid?

If it really lasts 12k miles and keeps the oil that clean it's worth a punt.

Currently I use around 2 gallons every 3k miles - 1.2 gallons on a refill and the remainder on top-ups.

If I could increase the change interval to 12k and maintain the same oil quality, that saves 3-4 gallons of oil, or about 60 quid. I would imagine the top-ups would stay about the same....

It makes impressive reading .. I would be interested but the website does not work. Also not sure if I have the room for it .. must measure it.

How can you buy them ?

What would be really impressive is if he started with standard 6000 mile old black oil, then put the new filter on, didn't change the oil, and it cleaned up like new.

In fact, I think I'll suggest that to him, and get a freebie, to demonstrate it.

I was impressed enough to buy one of those some time ago, think the guy had them on Ebay back then.

Seems strange that what appears to be an excellent product is so bloody hard to get hold of!

The last time I did a filter and oil change I couldnt belive costs filter £9 (fram) oil £25 (millers oil) flushing oil £9 . Wheni asked my mechanic to do it for me he charged me £60 with free oil top ups. For that I cant be arsed doing it myself.
