3 Days worth of Antibiotics

Hope one of the Ph Medics can shed some light.

Daughter has got a bit of a UTI.

Doctor prescribed some Antibiotics but when she got to the chemist realised the Doc had only prescribed enough for 3 days.

Taken above for 3 days and problem not getting any better so went back to the Docs who prescribed another 3 days worth.

Doc mentioned its now std practice to only prescribe 3 days of Antibiotics.

Not heard of this before as always thought a course was 5 days.

Is this the new std practice ?

My daughter has recurrent UTIs, thread floating around on here about it. We have always been given a weeks worth (7 days, sometimes 5). Might depend on their age though, my daughter is 5, almost 6.

What strength are they?
(I'm not a doc) but is it because people don't complete a week long course?

Daughter was given Trimethoprim 200mg tabs 2 per day x 3 days.

Age is 22 (no pics available)

And for a brief moment I was thinking "why would anybody take photos of a UTI?



The reason for this will be antibiotic resistance. Everybody is getting extremely jumpy about it these days and quite rightly so - every time anyone takes an antibiotic there's a chance that bacteria will develop immunity to it.

Was just wondering if it is a new "national policy" or its just our particular health trust or Drs Surgery.

Ww have taken up the GP's time twice and had to pay twice.

this is the standard dose and course for cystitis. they sometimes come in 5 day courses

it is standard practice for 3 days of trimethoprim for a simple uti ( ie no frank haematuria). Trimethoprim is first line, and usually a urine sample would be sent off to the lab before the antibiotics are commenced - this may give further sensitivities for other antibiotics if the first course does not work.
if the first course is unsucessful, then a different antibiotic may be prescribed.
However, different course lengths may be prescribed depending on which antibiotic is used.
