switching to canon........?????

i want to defect
With the D2x about to arrive, it's coming up for the time I should decide where the future is. If I go to America then I can pick up a 1Ds MkII, 50mm f/1.4, 70-200 f/2.8, 100-400 f/4.5-5.6, teleconverter (either 1.4 or 2x), 580EX, spare batteries, and a few 2GB CF cards for under £7000. If I offset this against the money I would make by selling my Nikon gear, then it isn't a huge amount more expensive than getting a D2x (although still significant!). I already have a 1D for backup, as well as a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 and Canon macro lens. So really what I am waiting for is to see what the reviews of the D2x are like, and I should speak to the accountant too.
Does anyone know if Canon and/or Nikon offers a worldwide warranty on their products, i.e. will I be OK buying them from the US?
Thoughts from the assembled masses are welcome and encouraged...

You don't say why you want to move though. At present the Canon range looks more attractive to the undecided newbie - but jump now and in a few years time maybe the pendulum will swing the other way. Who knows?
Anyway, defectors are always welcome as it means there'll be plenty of second hand stuff about for the rest of us... got any fast lenses for sale???

1Ds II is the bee's knees (I'm hoping to pick mine up in the next week or two), so well worth making the switch for IMHO.
Canon offer an International warranty on their lenses, but either US, Far East or European warranty on the bodies. I actually phoned them up about this recently, and it means that if you buy a US warrantied body, you need to send it back to the US for repair should it require it. A lens purchased in the US can however be sent to Canon UK for repair.
Go on - you know you want to!!

I have coveted Canon gear for quite a while (if you look back in this forum you will see me saying so!), in particular the lenses have always seemed like better value. And at the moment (depending on the form of the D2X) the bodies are a generation ahead as well. I am well aware that the pendulum can swing, which is why I will not jump into this decision lightly.
You calling me an undecided newbie?

Hmm warranties. I think that I would be OK with a US warranty on a 1Ds II. Has anyone here done something similar?
The D2X is released tomorrow. A few! pro photographers have had them for a month or so however they have had to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement prior to the 25th.
If you go back into www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID71&conf=DCConfID3
you will see some early reviews......from what is being said suggest you dont dump your Nikon gear yet!!!

Another sinner saved, welcome to the club
Don't think you will regret it, these folks haven't:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not against, or anti, Nikon before anyone starts 'platform' wars. I do think, however, that you have to pick the best tool for the job and, at the moment, IMHO, Canon make the better tools. For the record, I have changed medium format systems for one reason or another over the years for various reasons. Hasselblad to Bronica to Rolleiflex, and now, back to 'blads again. So I can well sympathise with the financial aspect of doing it.

Not the best IMHO I prefer the 17-40, even with the smaller aperture. A lot of converts still like their Nikkor 17-35, so if you have one you may want to keep and buy an adaptor for the Canon.

Not looking good. I'm getting the impression it's a leap up from the 1DX and fine at low ASA but not a match for the image quality of Canon especially at high ASA, ATBE (
, get it! Perhaps Ted could make a new smilie
). As suspected, to much noise. Wait a few days and the reviews will start to appear. However, if it does turn out to be a lemon, your trade in/sale values may not be what you're expecting as they may be quite a few people making the switch so they may be a flood of lenses coming onto the market. I'm sure there are loads of people who have been waiting for the 2DX and tomorrow is crunch time. There will be likes and dislikes with switching to Canon. No system is perfect. I don't know what they will be as I haven't shot with Nikon since the F3. I did think of switching to Nikkors and buying a 14n........ until that turned out to be a lemon.
Whatever your decision, the best of luck.
Don't know about warranty with Canon. A mate is out in Florida at the moment buying more glass (he switched a couple of years ago). I'll ask him when he returns (in a few days I think), if you like.
Cheers.

Barcardi et al............Ok here you go a review of the D2X with sample pix
www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html
Oh and look what I have found....heehee
"The DX format has shown real muscle with the introduction of the D2X, transcending the quality expectation for this tiny format. Pitched against the reigning DSLR champion, Canon 1 DS Mk.II, D2X comes out on top with better performance in nearly all aspects. This shows that Nikon's approach to digital SLR technology with focus on the "DX" format, stubborn and seemingly in conflict with the current perception of "full frame" as the only viable solution, in the end might just be the more prudent move after all."
Happy days....however not provoking a Nikon v Canon arguement it is the end result that counts

Well, if the undying enthusiasm and positive talk of Nikon users (who have yet to see any real, high res, RAW, comparative samples) are able to make a camera as good as they can make it sound.... I'll buy one tomorrow!
The guy I share a studio with (a die hard Nikon user) sent me this link.........:
www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=312086&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
.........which starts off with similar, enthusiastic, claims.

Not too sue why you would get excited about a report on amateur photographer forums (DPreview) quoting a Japanese website (which turned out to be Finnish ???).
In case you haven't kept up with the thread,
Spanish Pro who's actually used one said:
"My test images with a preseries camera are totally different. If the final camera has the same noise you will be surprised, but in the negative side. I can post the images in a week. It´s a good camera, but don´t expect too much."
followed by Italian who said:
in another forum a spanish reviewer that tested the D2X
"I think that review it´s not real. I tested a D2x this weekend for a spanish website (www.caborian.com) and i can say that my old 1Ds is better than the D2x. We can publish the review the 26th."
followed by London Pro said:
"I've been shooting London Fashion Week for the whole of last week.
I had the pleasure of shooting with a D2X and the new 300mm f2.8 VR. Fantastic lens, great camera! Unfortunately, the noise is an issue. I shot at 800 asa, and compared to the images I shot on my Canon 1DMkII and 1DSMkII, the D2X is much noisier.
I have to point out though that I was using an early body, and that I only had one show with the D2X. The lights were tungsten, using the tungsten pre set WB, and jpeg fine.
To answer the question...definitely 1DS MkII is the clear winner."
--------------
Whatever, the proof will be in the pudding. Roll on next Saturday when all the bullsh!t can be finally laid to rest..... one way or another.
I did have a peep at that DP forum, some of the thread titles had me in stitches
'Canon is DOOMED' and 'Will Canon sell it's manufacturing?' followed by:
"It's going to be tough on Canon. They can buy Sony sensors, but what are they going to do with their billions invested in sensor facilities? They can stick with their old technology, but their cameras will become increasingly otgunned.
I hope that they make the right choices. We want strong competition. We don't want Nikon to get arrogant."
I wouldn't count chickens just yet.
