I was looking at the Tesla Model 3 just out and the screen looks like an iPad Pro velcroed to the dashboard.

Which reminded me of the similar sticky-out lost looking info screen in the DB11.

Why can't manufacturers integrate these screens into the design more elegantly - not to mention the sharp bits that will make mincemeat of your body parts in an accident?

Same as a load of the cheaper end Mercs and Audi's.
I agree, the stuck out permanently look just seems half assed. Like they got this far and drew a blank so....." Just stick it on there and we can pretend it's like an iPad".
I'm not fond of cars with 'stuck on iPad' screens. It's not like they can't do it. Take the Audi A1, A4 and A6. The 1 @ 6 have screens that fold into the dash. The 6 does it by itself. So why, in the name of beelzebubs left testicle, does the A4 have the half-assed iPad?
Coz designers don't need to exist in the same plane as normal people. First they grow a goatee and eventually start to think Karl Lagerfeld is actually well dressed.
Don't over analyse or you'll end up all cynical and opinionated like me. smile

I wonder if you could swivel that of the Tesla. Agree it looks bad in the 11.

I was told by an AMG engineer at Frankfurt last year, that the reason for the 'iPad' arrangement, is to reduce the depth of the dash.

The Tesla Model 3 has no other display or buttons, so it will have to stay up/open.

These sort of things will also make production much easier, and reconfiguration a software rather than hardware thing.

Modern tech makes traditional form in cabins and to the exterior unnecessary IMO. We'll probably start to see way more radical changes over the next decade or two. Especially as cars start to drive themselves increasingly. It's both sad and exciting smile

What gets me is previous generation cars had their nav/infotainment screen implemented into the dashboard nicely, so why with the newer gen cars are they shifting toward iPad-stuck-to-the-dash look?

Not seen the DB11 interior in the flesh yet, but unless the whole dash setup looks far better in real life then i'm not keen.

I too think the afterthought screen looks bloody stupid. Cars at this level are supposed to look elegant and well crafted, the dash to me looks like they ran out of time. They could at least have had it so it laid flatter to the dash and perhaps pivoted towards the driver when in use.

I hope i'm wrong and I like it in the flesh, but unlikely I'd have thought.

No doubt they'll do the same half arsed thing with the new Vanatge too.......

Dunno, look at the current/outgoing range of Astons - they all share the same dash as it makes sense to do so to keep production costs down and reinforces the corporate look, so I think its safe to assume that the new Vantage dash will look this way too.

I too dislike the new craze for sticking an ipad on the dash, but it seems the way that many manufacturers are going now and I suspect even more will follow.

Smaller screens. Easier and cheaper to implement. More reliable once implemented.

That's interesting.

However with the Tesla 3 getting 250,000 preorders and over 1400 for the DB11 it doesn't look like these screens are any barrier to sales.

The cynic in me says the answer is simple, it's just cheaper to manufacturer it that way. So more profits per car. And people basically put up with it as there is no alternative.

Agree, there was no answers in that article just corporate waffle. If you look at the Merc interior it wouldn't take a lot to make it look integrated, wouldn't raise the binnale line much. Just a cheap way of doing it these days.

But get used to it - look at the Teslas. No attempt to inegrate, just plonk a tablet on a bracket. No doubt the kids will love it as cars are becoming just white goods. The more car manufacturers can add tech / tablet stuff the better. It does make dashboard design really simple and easily upgradable. No doubt will eventually have lots of user configuration - what do you want on your screen, how big do you want the heater controls (as an example).

Still looks st in an Aston though, and I normally love a bit of tech.

Just read that Elon Musk tweeted that the instrument panel "will make sense after part 2 of the Model 3 unveil." So looks like it was an unfinished design.

I doubt we'll be hearing the same response from AM. If the part is from Mercedes then it's probably a done deal and won't be changed before delivery.
