All, thanks for your replies
much fewer options that I have expected. I'm leaning towards Autowerke, but not excited of the trek
So, hope that more replies / suggestions would come and something closer will pop up
on a different page, it seems like such questions keep popping up, so it may be an idea to put together a list of the good indies across the country and have it easy to access

Try www.barr-tech.co.uk in Cambridge, near the Science Park. Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo and Maserati. Good guys, yes I have direct experience of their work.

did you use them for an air-cooled one? do you know how much experience they have with the older models?
In the past i've used them for a 944 and recently, a some F cars. I don't have direct experience of air-cooled Porsches with them but every time I go in there, there are air-cooled cars present, usually all manner of things. I wouldn't hesitate to take an air-cooled car there.Hi Geebeez
Good car choice fella
I'm near cambridge with a 993 cab too. what colour is yours - I'll keep my eyes open for ya.
Ours is schwatz black with black roof.
I take it to dove house for mechanical stuff - it's over at rushden but good roads via kimbolton for a blast and they provided decent courtesy minis if you leave 993 there. Nice guys seem to know their stuff.
Took my previous 993 coupe to Barrtech in cambridge once for scuttle repair so can vouch for their bodyshop. They certainly had a few aircooled 911's in for work each time I called in and seemed pretty knowledgeable with a good reputation.
Edited to add that a couple of people on 911UK forum who own 993's and live near Cambridge have had good things to say about the workshop at the Cambridge OPC. I've never used them myself but was told they are very keen to encourage classic 911's and that the mechanics are very enthusiastic about the older cars. This was backed up to an extent when I went to look at a 993 for sale near Cambridge and was told it had been owned until recently and for quite a few years before that by one of the workshop mechanics at Cambridge OPC.
My vote is still for Dove house at the moment though as they specialise in Porsches and my experience of their customer service has been very good so far.
