Painting plastic grilles
Discussion
I bought a spare set of front grilles for my car to paint black to replace the standard silver painted ones. I used Halfords products; 2x coats of plastic primer, 2x coats of matte black paint (used matte to give the lacquer something to adhere to) and then 2x coats of clear lacquer. They seemed to come out quite well I thought:

It's the ones above and below the number plate I'm on about and the trouble is they've picked up a couple of stone chips already. I'm wondering what I should have done differently, maybe used different/tougher lacquer? Or just more coats of lacquer? Something else entirely?
