ok, I know its a long shot, but someone might know. We've just got back from a holiday and we took some photos with the setting on M which having looked at the manual (back home) says Aperture value and shutter speed, all the photos are very bright and lots of detail has gone. Does anyone know if its possible to get the camera to change the photos back to its normal display? I've downloaded the photos to the computer, to try and edit, but they're ruining really. Thank Q

If you shot raw + jpeg, the raw files should be recoverable in a post-processor like Lightroom (or even Silkypix that's included with Panasonic cameras, though I struggled with it).

If you just shot jpeg, post-processing is less likely to help as much; I suspect underexposed would have been better than overexposed.

M means Manual, in this case manual exposure. In other words the camera's brain is switched off so you have to set the shutter speed and aperture yourself, just like the old days before Auto was invented.

Depending on how much they're over-exposed you might be able to get something out of them in processing, but I suspect the highlights and probably much more are gone. Can't tell without looking.

Where did you get the idea for using M from and did you not look at the monitor to see the photos after shooting? That's the time to say 'Arse' and do it again...

Thank you Nimby and Simpo Two for explaining what M does. It explains why its over exposed. I should have checked the screen, I don't know why but I didn't, I guess I've never had a problem with it before and I didn't have my glasses on! At least I won't waste any more time looking for a way to bring them back to how I'd like them.

We were walking along Whitby beach yesterday in glorious weather when I whipped the camera out for a few pictures.

If you post one we can tell you if there's anything worth saving. Sounds like a job for RAW and a beasting though. Next time if in doubt use Auto or Program (A or P) if you don't want to get too embroiled in details.

So there I was last year in Canada just as the Martin Mars water bomber came in for a test drop. And somehow I managed to turn the exposure up instead of down... I was able to save the photos, but only just.
