Audi Q5 engine exchange price?
Discussion
Hi all, mate of mine who is clueless about cars has stupidly overfilled his 2.0TDi Q5 (about a 2010 model I think) with a ridiculous amount of oil, driven it on the motorway and within few minutes, funny noises and plooms of smoke coming ot the rear.
Called the AA who towed it to nearest "German car specialist" in Cardiff who have diagnosed as uneconomical to repair.
Mate has sent me their quote through, what are your guys opinions:
Donor engine - £2000 (no mention of where it's coming from/mileage etc..)
Oils/filter/coolants/turbo chemical clean - £210.00
Fitting (approx 18.5hrs) - £1017
+VAT etc..
TOTAL - £3880.00
Now I've told him to not only get a few more quotes but to ask a few questions about the replacement engine/warranty/discount etc, and they've said they will knock 10% off labour rate and also £100.00 off if paying via bank transfer and NOT Credit Card. That automatically smells dodgy to me, what are your guys opinion?

2 grand won't get you an engine from an audi dealer.
So where is it from?
The cynic in me says it's from a crashed car and has been "fully reconditioned ". In other words the block has been painted silver!
What exactly had gone in the other engine to make uneconomical to repair? You need to know what has failed.
The garage may well be genuine but this has the possibility for a good scam.
They could repair the old engine, and charge you 4 grand for a 'new' engine they haven't even fitted.
More details required. Tread very carefully.

This is exactly what I've told him, when I asked what had actually gone, he told me the woman that called from the garage went on & on and just baffled him with engine talk (Like i say, he is totally clueless abour cars, hence why he topped up with about 4ltrs of oil!!). So where is it from?

It may well be genuine but just bothers me as mate is so naive and would be the poor buggers honeymoon money covering it as well. The fact they mentioned £100.00 off for BACS transfer payment makes me smell a rat as well as compared to c/card payment, presumably no comeback if problems month down the line..

Beware of reconditioned engines or gearboxes! Local to me was a unit which was selling recon engines with a 3 month warranty. Apparently they bought any engine, condition unknown, gave it a clean up and a coat of paint but nothing else. The place lasted about 6 months and then disappeared overnight. I've heard similar tales for recon gearboxes.

Hi Chaps the main reason they the garage may want the Op to pay by BACs is that if he pays by credit card then the credit card Co is responsible in law for the repair, if anything goes wrong, the garage obviously does not want the might of a CC company coming after them with there big legal team and equally big pockets taking them to court, OP wont have either the resources nor the "correct way to deal with the garage once the problems start (if indeed they do)
If OP goes down the garage repair get EVERYTHING in writing before hand. Whilst a 2nd hand engine for 2K should be ok your only likely to get 30 days "warranty" on the engine OP should be able to get longer on the Labour side of things, good luck.
