Out of interest, will an Interim Serp Setup install on a Pre Serp engine given the crank differences?

Assuming, no power steering, and Air Con on the Pre Serp...

Is this what you mean?

If so, yes it fitted it on mine.Much, MUCH better oil pump. Worth a call to JE to check tho.

As per the JE product above you will need the longer woodruff key to drive the pump.

My old 4.3 crank didn't have the longer key way. But if your stripping the engine it would be easy enough to get it elongated.

Thanks for all the replies and info guys smile, just wondering if it could be done really and it seems it can with a little work. I do have an interim cover and wondered if I could retro fit it to gain the benefits of the improved oil pump.

Is it true that the Pre Serp front cover oil pumps wear very quickly at high revs (6000 RPM+) compared to the crank driven oil pumps? If so, what can be done to minimise this other than upgrading to the interim cover?

Also, am I right in assuming the Tuscan Challenge cars and the SEAC’s used pre serp front covers without issue?

Cheers

Yes, all of the wedges inc. SEACs used the pre serp front cover. Although it's certainly not common it's not unknown for the oil pressure relief valve to stick open on the pre serp set-up and then all oil pressure is lost.

Yes, you can use a standard Land Rover intermediate front cover on a pre-serp but unfortunately (like the JE cover) you'll have to extend the crankshaft pulley woodruff key slot and also use a serpentine pulley. As Carsy says this means its not a quick swap as the crank has to come out to extend the woodruff key slot. I have hear of one individual that bought the longer serp woodruff key and machined away the inner edge at the front so only the back half slotted into the pre-serp crank and another person suggested extending the crank slot in-situ with an angle grinder, your safest option is to send the crank to John Eales.

It's also worth noting the standard Land Rover intermediate front covers have oil cooler supply and return takeoffs that can be used or blanked off with two screw in plugs from John Eales.

You can see here the serpentine pulley is shorter to make room for the crank driven oil pump.

This second picture shows the pre-serp woodruff key is too short to reach the shorter serpentine pulley.

The early TVR Tuscan Challenge race cars must have used pre-serp front covers because the race series started in 1989 and Land Rover's intermediate covers first appeared in 1994.
