997 oil and coolant temp gauges
Discussion
A strange one. Is my 997.2 S engine playing silly buggers are my gauges bonkers?
On a 100 mile motorway trip last week, I noticed that the oil and coolant temperatures both dropped well below normal operating levels when at a cruise. I didnt take a note of the levels but the drop was very marked - down to the levels you would normally see after 10-15 mins gentle driving and before up to temperature. Both gauges went back up to normal within a few minutes of higher revs (i.e. driving in 4th rather than 6th for a bit). I had noticed the gauges drop down a bit at highish speeds with low loads before (dull A road driving), but they always pinged back up quickly and I didnt worry too much as I know the gauges are not very accurate anyway.
I am now thinking that, given that the gauges are buffered, isnt dropping down from 90 pretty serious because the actual temperature must have dropped off a cliff to cause the needle to move?
Anyone else experienced this? If the engine has decided to over-cool itself, I suppose that might be quite bad.

Once mine water temp. has warmed up the gauge is vertical at 80C and never fluctuates up or down including track days. The oil temperature does increase significantly on track but quickly drops down (to 90C) for normal driving, so I'd say your gauges are suspect more than your engine. Could it be a voltage problem? It's curious that they increase when engine speed increases, i.e., alternator putting out more power. I've got a Halfords digital voltmeter I can plug into the cigar lighter - it's useful to se what the alternator is doing.
Personally, I think an voltmeter is more useful than a water temperature gauge. The 996 has a voltmeter but no oil temp. and the 997 has oil temp. but no voltmeter! For water, all you need is a light to show when it's too cold and too hot!
Let us know what you find out please.
