As Per thread title.

I suppose it depends where in the world and time zone you live...scratchchin

It could be 9/11 and The world trade centres or the death of "The queen of hearts".....rolleyes

We were woken up at 4am by a telephone call from Mrs WR's workmate to say Diana had been killed...ffs!

A couple that stand out.

First one being that my younger cousin had fell and hit her head, and was now in ICU with a brain bleed.

Another one would be being woken up by my mum to be asked "do you know Suchandsuch", to which I replied "Yes, why?", only to be told that he was hit and killed by a car the night before. He was a friend of mine and in my year in school, so very shocking indeed.

Also was woken up one day to be told that my uncle had collapsed that morning due to an aneurysm bursting in his brain, and that the outlook was bleak, thankfully he did eventually make a full recovery thanks to some very smart and capable doctors/surgeons/nurses.

Diana? Shocking? I really couldn't have given less of a st if I tried.

The most was being woken up to being told my grand-father had died. I was 8 at the time. It didn't really compute. I don't remember being particularly affected but then again, I do remember it so it is probably worth something.

Princess Di - was on holiday with friends at the time and the lady who served us breakfast mentioned it in passing. Quite a lot to take in when hungover. This was before the internet so was the next day when we got the details from the UK papers.

Being phoned by my mum to tell me that Royal Air Force Germany Band had been involved in a coach crash and fire on the return from a job .
The final death toll was 21.
Dad had not long returned from Germany so as a family we knew all on board the coach .

Diana - only because I was staying in a hotel yards away from where it happened and wondered what the noise and commotion was at the time. Rolled over went back to sleep. It was only when I woke up in the morning and put the telly on I realised. Went down for breakfast and the place was already crawling with press "did you see anything last night sir?" etc.

I think probably David Bowie dying of cancer. Had been discussing his previous album only two days before and commented on how he seemed to have a new lease of life!

I found out about Diana when I was in the back of a Taxi going to church as a kid. I remember thinking it was a big deal for someone so famous to die, but I don't think I was shocked. I think Elizabeth will probably feel like the end of an era and further the distance from our wartime past.

Iain Banks getting cancer was a shocker. It still saddens me that there will be no more Iain Banks books and that the younger generation will talk about him in the past tense, if even at all.

Strangely, waking up and finding that Brussels had been bombed didn't really shock me at all. I read the first article on my phone, thought "wow, that's bad", put the kettle & TV on to hear Sky news in full-on apocalypse/grieving mode, then I rolled up the blind and saw what a beautiful morning it was and unpeeled one of the overpriced satsumas I'd bought as an experiment the previous night. It's still my association with the attack- stunning morning and a really good orange. I'd turned off the news before the kettle had boiled!

Was drunk the night before on a teen night out. Woken at 2am where my mates had left me snoozing in the back of a car to say Dodi had died, vaguely remembered being told the night before, turned on the tv.....

Sure there are many many with far worse.

I was quite young when that happened - nine years old, I remember running back up stairs to tell my grand folks as I was staying at their house for a few days at the time.

I wouldn't say it was shocking, but I do remember waking my parents up that morning to tell them that there were no cartoons on because Diana had died!
