When to change tyres?

I was looking through Garmin Connect and noticed that I have done 1700 miles on my roadie in the last few years. 1600 of those have been on the same set of tyres (Rubino Pros). Never had a puncture with them and they look fine expect some very small cracking on the side walls.

Are they due a change?

They last a long time, I wouldn't change them until they started getting some serious cuts or canvass showing, or started to pick up regular punctures to be honest. They're a very robust tyre, so you may find you get another 1700 out of them.

Some tyres have wear indicators on them...



...so if you can still see 'em, and the sidewalls are OK, and you're not getting oodles of punctures? I'd say keep 'em a while longer.

I rode my Continental GP 4 Seasons tyres until the rubber fell off the carcass. That's probably the extreme opposite to swapping them out too soon. But I'm sure you'll know when it comes time for new rubber. You'll see cuts and nicks in the 'tread' area, splitting in the sidewalls, or punctures will just become more frequent. No harm in buying a new set now though, so that you've got 'em when you come to need 'em.

I got 6000km out of a rubino pro on the rear, but probably changed it 500km Iater than I should have. The front has almost 7000 km on it, and still looks fine. I should get another 4k or so out of that one.

I got about 2,300 miles out of a set of Rubino Pros. That's 17 stone of me (19.5 when I started riding on them!) squashing them into the tarmac, and all but about 200 miles have been on the commute into Central London. I reckon on quieter roads without bellends pulling out in front of me, I'd have got closer to 3,000 miles out of them.

I put another pair straight on.

3,000 miles from a set of GP4000s 2. still look ok, but the rear is squaring off a little.
