Hello!

Ok so we are at the stage of having the property secured and now needing to get the ball rolling on the marketing/theme side of things.

Please see below for the basic business idea:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Please see page 5 for the most up to date lodge type and the property itself.

Any thoughts/feedback on a business name?

We don’t want to go run of the mill holiday business name, we want to stand out from the crowd a little and try and be the only hit on Google for the name.

The property is called Crowness cottage, so we are currently thinking something along the lines of:

"Crowness Woodland Retreats"

"Crowness Vale"

Or the other idea we have had, moving away from Crowness completely is

"Tømmerstokk Vale" (Tømmerstokk is Norwegian (origins of the cabins) for log)

Or even

"Tømmerstokk Hytter" which translates to literally "log cabins"

Its hard to come up with something unique but at the same time memorable.

Over to You guys to A) rip me to shreds and B) come up with inappropriate ideas laugh

Thanks

Scandinavian.

helmassa
den store utendørs
den stora utomhus
den store udendørs

I prefer the first one as I spend a lot of time there, and it means...

The great outdoors.

I'm no marketing expert that's the wife's business's but I like the Norwegian idea it separates you from just a standard log cabin. How about Tommerstock hytter @ Crowness.

Doesn't confuse people with too much Norwegian and I'm sure it links well with your online marketing strategy fb Twitter etc...

Best of luck the cabins look superb.

Sorry no idea for good names, but if you are using the internet to get business, it is better to use a name which is easy to spell, so if people have heard of you, they can search by name. Tømmerstokk Vale would be a nightmare for a bad speller like me.

Using Tømmerstokk Vale, would not encourage me to click a link but luxury log cabins would. People are less interested in a name when googling and more interested in matches to their search.

Don't know if it helps, but I travel a lot and stay in many different places, and I have never booked because of a stand-out name, in fact a couple of places I have stayed at a few times I would be pushed to tell you their actual name, I just know where they are located and use that to find them again.

When looking for a place, I look for pictures on a website and feedback. The cabins do look wonderful and that's what would sell them to me, not a name

Hmmm, I do quite like Helmassa, but on googling it the word Helmassa doesn’t seem to mean anything on its own, google says "luonnon helmassa" means "out in the open", any links/reference to the meaning/translation of Helmassa on its tod?

You make some very good points there and certainly something to consider. I think an amalgamation of the two could be good. www.Tømmerstokk-Vale.co.uk - Luxury woodland log cabins as the tagline.

I’ll have a think, thank you smile

If someone goes to type it in then they'll need to work out how to type an "ø"

Perhaps making life easier for customers would make more sense?

As a punter, I agree with a previous post; website, pics and reviews seal deals with me. Name is inconsequential. So put your energies in to those and pick a simple name that is low risk in terms of spelling, inference or recollection. Good luck!

A Finn told me this:

you could say villi luonto (wild nature) or villi erämaa (wild wilderness/desert)

Also mean great outdoors rather than using luonnon helmassa as its a better translation.

My advice for what is worth -

1) Keep it simple
2) Make it memorable but easy enough to spell
3) Keep it as short as possible
4) The name isn't as important as the brand around it (which I think you're doing well with)
5) The website is your selling point

If you go for Tommerstokk I wouldn't bother with the hyphen and I would seriously consider the vale. Perhaps just TheTommerstockk - I would also register variations and just repoint them at the main site for those like me that can remember names but not how to spell them.

Best of luck with a great concept - you should be able to get lots of free publicity if you get it right.

Only issue with Tommerstockk is this:

http://www.tommerstock.no

They might complain and you could get lots of calls about them not the company.

I doubt it. I set up and ran a company that shared a name with a company in the US. We were even in the same vertical. They started after us but we never got any confusion and certainly no phone calls. If it isn't trademarked or you are passing off and the URL is available then anything is fair game imo (but I am not a lawyer).

My contribution would be that people buy into what they comfortable with.

I would be less likely to contact a Company if I were unsure how to pronounce the name.

However, I find the idea of staying in a genuine log cabin more appealing than the unusual timber clad mobile home/large shed, so I like the Norwegian twist.

Some really interesting points made, thank you all.

I agree with it all as well, I need something thats:

- Memrobale

- Unique

- Short and consise

- pronounsable and spellable

- Needs to be backed up with a great website/photography and marketing

Its no good calling myself something like "Woodland log cabins" or "Valley retreats" as there will be hundreds of google results for them, I want to be the one and only result for the name, and work on things like the above with good SEO.

I'll get thinking and report back with any ideas we come up with......

I have decades of senior level multinational major brand advertising under my belt. There's absolutely no point in having a brand name that your target market doesn't know to search for. You'll be alone in search rankings in more ways than one. It's fine if you're famous, but you aren't (yet).

Secondly, a Scandinavian name for a UK holiday is utterly confusing. Keep it simple, otherwise you'll get a ton of hits from the wrong people (eg those looking to holiday in the fjords). You'll be paying a shed load to AdWords but your conversion rate will be tiny.

Put yourself in the shoes of your intended audience. If you cannot abstract yourself to that place (most business owners can't manage), then I suggest you do some objective research with your target audience before taking the plunge. Getting comments here is a good start, but don't leave it at that. Good luck, they're lovely smile

Might be good to try and include something related to the peace and quiet aspect. I was thinking "retreat" but then that might get pigeon-holed with the psychobabblers and god-botherers. Haven is too holiday-park. Hideaway? Sanctuary? Escapes? See where I'm going? Peaceful Places?

And you could match that up with something local and/or ancient, along the lines of Tarka. Fuschia (Valley) Hideaways?

I'm sure those two are not the answer but just suggesting the theme.

I have twice rented holiday cottages and when I was looking my first concern was where, and how many people it slept and more importantly how many bathrooms.

Construction type and material was way down the list.

You've already got a start in the Crowness Cottage is well known to Google.

Keep it simple and Googlable, Crowness Cottage Scandinavian Log Cabins
