Afternoon all,

I've been considering switching to First Direct, their perks suit me and they seem to offer a good service.

Only problem is I've been looking into their feedback on Facebook/Trust Pilot and have been reading a lot of complaints about how difficult it is to contact them by phone, obviously for a 'phone bank' this isn't ideal. Perhaps they have become a victim of their own success? It seems the people complaining are used to having the phone answered within a minute and I've seen people reporting wait times from 10-30 minutes.

Has anyone got any experience with them and would recommend/not recommend?

They are awful and I doubt you'll find anyone on here has a good word to say about them smile

I'm sure I will be the first of many to say they have been great to deal with over the past two years.

I have phoned a couple of times and got almost straight through, I guess it depends what time of day you call! You can deal with most things online though meaning there's no need to call.

Right on cue, I'm here to say a good word about them!

I've been with them for 15 years. They answer the phone quickly and the security process is easy. When I go overdrawn they call up or text me and give me time to fix it before charging me. Most importantly, nothing has ever gone wrong that I can remember. They've been lenient with some of the transactions I make that other banks might charge me for.

Whereas I've been with Lloyds (albeit for business banking) the same time, and they mess up a third of the transfers I make.

Great! Good to hear good reviews. I'm always skeptical of feedback online as it's only ever written by people with an axe to grind!

On reflection, I think Jockman was doing that thing they call sarcasm and it totally passed me by.

I've been with them well over 10 years and been very happy. Although in the past 6 months or so I have noticed it takes a while for them to answer. They used to pride themselves on answering the phone within 2 rings.

It is worth it though. Internet banking is good, so is their phone app. When you call, whoever you speak to is based in the uk and has authority to do almost everything you need. They also have voice recognition so no more having to go through security questions. They know it's you just from your voice!

They're top notch for customer service and ease use and I strongly recommend them.

They're a little slower to answer the phone than they once were, though. I'd say around half the time I get right through to someone and the other half need to wait 3-5 minutes.

Waiting or not, it's like this:
First Direct: *ring ring* good afternoon First Direct how can I help you?

Every other bank: *ring ring* enter sort code and account number, date of birth, inside leg measurement, navigate overly complex telephone menu, then wait several minutes to speak to someone

This.

I've been with them about 5 years and they are brilliant, as far as I know they are also consistently rated as about the highest bank for customer service in surveys.

They recently screwed me (on buying a car of all things) but to make up for it they did put me up in London and frankly their service has been SO good over the years, I just can't bring myself to switch banks (even though it is ridiculously easy now).

What is odd is that all my dealings with HSBC (mortgage), who own FD, have been pretty shocking. Typically 10 - 15 minute wait to talk to someone.

Never heard anything bad about FD though.

Great, thanks for all the positive feedback. Their switching services looks dead easy as well. Apply online and they do they rest.

Thanks!

Never had a problem with them either, been with them for years. To be fair I don't ask a lot of them but every time I've called it's been answered quickly and dealt with straight away.

I was with HSBC (and Midland Bank before that) for about 18 years. Given they are owned by the same people, the service couldn't be more different.
