I don't think that I have ever tasted truffle oil. I intend to cook something using it. Earlier I popped into Waitrose to buy some. However, what I found was olive oil "with a drizzle of truffle". Unsure if it was proper truffle oil, I left it on the shelf.

A quick bit of research suggests that it is indeed the real stuff.

Anyway, my research suggests that not all truffle oils are the same.

Can anyone recommend a decent oil, please?

I would like to buy it from one of the main supermarkets, if possible.

TIA.

There is virtually no 'real' truffle oil made, because it is not possible to infuse oil with real truffle without it turning nasty very quickly.

Hence, anything you buy in a supermarket or very expensive specialist deli will be oil with a truffle flavour added (essentially a chemical flavouring).

My advice is to buy truffle butter online, which does contain real truffles (white or black). You can use it just like 'truffle oil' and it can be kept in the freezer for several months.

carluccio's do a good one that you can buy in the deli attached to most of their restaurants or you can get it online

its got a few tiny shavings of white truffle in the bottom that give it a bit of credibility, but as with all the oils make sure you use it fairly quickly once opened as the flavour deteriorates after a few weeks.

PS best truffle oil recipe.....scallops baked in their shell with some gently sauteed matchsticks of carrot, celery, etc and a drizzle of truffle oil. Seal the two halves of the shell with pastry before baking for about 10 mins. Serve at the table with the shell still closed and when you crack the top shell off the smell is absolutely sublime......

We've been using this for a few years, pretty good, £13 posted from Amazon.

Thanks for all the answers.

I now have to make my mind up.

The butter seems very expensive. £25 for a small jar is just too much when I don't even know if I like it.

Chips drizzled with truffle oil while in the last few mins of cooking, and Parmesan cheese drizzled on that when out the over.

Stolen from some resturant in Florida. Bit sickly but bloody good!

No need for a poncy overpriced jar.

I get mine from here. £6.95 for 100g or one of each for £12:

I'd be interested to know how much is truffle, and how much is truffle flavour, whatever that might be.

I find that it loses flavour/potency over time which is a shame as it's not something that you will use every week and means a lot of wastage.
