Afternoon Chaps,

I am a Canon man and know nothing about Nikon. My old man however has a Nikon D40x with several lens he's been using since its release in 2007.

Anyway, I am considering buying him a new body (as he's been nice!) and have been looking at D5200 & D5300.

Will lenses that he has been using with the D40x fit a D5200/D5300?

Hdew have the D5200 body at £240 and the D5300 body at £320. I didnt really want to spend more than £300, but if there is a product at £350 say which is worth the extra Id consider it?

Thanks in Advance.

Yes, his lenses will work fine.
If he's used to the simplicity of the D40x, the D3300 is a cracking little body (£229 Currys) as well, produces lovely images. Strap on a 50mm 1.8 and it'll give as good as anything.

If he likes his D40x he may not actually want a new body. Or has he been grumbling about it for some reason?

He loves his D40x, but having used my 70d and my sisters D3300 he recognises his is a bit behind the times now. He wants a new one, but he doesn't like spending money on himself. So I'm doing it for him...

I think I like the look of the D5300, should do him for a while.

Fair enough. According to a quick Google neither camera has an AF motor in the body, so if his lenses autofocus with the D40x they'll also do it with a D5x00. The lens designation to look for is 'AF-S'.
