I bought a 944 in February and have used it very little over the last few cold months.
I started the car in my garage today and I noticed a high pitch noise from the belt area. This was pretty noisy and I tried to make a video of the engine, capturing the sound...here.

Not sure how to share video - but it is here:

This is not like the sound from any of my previous 944s.

Any help appreciated.

That sounds like the auxilary belt. Possibly too tight.

I would take the belt covers off and with the engine ticking over spray WD40 into each pulley in turn. If the noise reduced briefly it may indicate a bad bearing. I'd wear safety glasses and keep my hands clear of the belts. Try at your own risk.

Thanks for the replies.
I will give this a go and be very careful.
Just to be sure, do you spray the WD40 onto the belts or onto the rollers and idlers?

Thanks

I would never spray WD40 onto the timing belts, I would try a little on the alternator belt first off though. It seems like you should ask experienced 944 mechanic to look at the car to be safe.

Was the cam belt changed just before you bought it ?, friend of mine had a similar noise on his 944 and the cambelt was too tight.

Cam belt and balance shaft belts were changed in June 2014 by 928 spares in Stroud and the car has done almost zero miles since.

I will check how tight the belts are in the morning.
