Strange but true, a bloke assaulted me as I was mowing verges just a few hours ago.

Just to set the scene...I have about half a mile of verges to mow (with a ride on), about three metres wide...all adjacent to a rural road (albeit quite busy), just outside quake ridden Christchurch NZ.

(Also, I might add, there is no requirement to have any insurance in NZ)

...Just done the first 200 metre strip, chucking all the grass onto the road - when a bloke pulls up behind me and accuses me of hitting his car with a stone thrown up by the mower, and "what am I going to do about it?"

He ends up telling me to get my fking lawnmower off the road, he is going to report me, and he grabbed my upper arm as some sort of threat.

I did go back to the house, to report it to the police - then carried on and finished all the verges.

The damage was a mark about 10mm long and 1/2mm deep - which meant (apparently) the whole drivers door needed respraying.

The car? a 2014 Mazda CX5. If he thinks I'm going to be paying he is going to be disappointed, c'est la vie.

It's lawful to dump your grass on the road?

I think he has a point.

I have a verge to mow alongside a road. I keep a close eye on the traffic and stop as cars pass.

Insurance requirements aside, you should recompense him.

And grabbing your arm's assault? Wuss.

Unless there are definite swage lines or trims on the door which break the door down into smaller areas a complete door respray is very likely to be able to lose the edge of the repair - the edge of the clear will be noticable.
In the case of silvers & other pale metallics very likely that painting the door will result in the door not matching the rest of the car & worst case would involve a respray of the side.
I SMART repair professionally & generally don't do doors due to the above.

I was driving along the other day, and there was some git mowing the verge - didn't give a toss, just dumping the grass onto the road. A stone got thrown up from his bloody mower, ttted the side of my car with a hell of a bang. When I stopped, it'd taken a big chunk out the paint - but he did not give the first toss, and just tried to ignore me. Angry at his arrogance, I reached out for his arm to try to get him to actually listen to me - but he got all self-righteous and threatened to call the police on me!

O/T but I'm glad you're in NZ. When I first started reading your post and saw the posting time I thought that I'd have been angry if you'd been mowing the verge in the middle of the night.

If you're arguing with someone, you do not, under any circumstances, lay hands on them. Not a finger.

I would never lay a finger on someone I was having a verbal dispute with. Unless they touched me, like grabbed my arm. Then I'd happily smash their teeth in.

I'm not a very touchy feely person.

So you admit that your actions resulted on the damage to his car, yet you refuse to accept that you are responsible for your own clear actions. That's a serious character flaw and questions all and any further actions on your part.

Exactly how rude and arrogant were you to the person in the car, before he grabbed your arm in an attempt to stop you riding off?

I agree - there's no need to ever touch anyone unless they get feely first.

However... It does seem like you're a bit careless with your mowing OP. If I was driving along a road and some bloke on a mower was chucking all the grass, stones etc. onto the road whilst people were driving past, I'd be pissed too.

And then you grassed him in to the police.

How does he know it was your mower that kicked up the stone?

As the OP states that he was doing the mowing, and doesn't mention anybody else mowing with him, I think it's would be a safe assumption on the part of the Mazda driver that it was the OP's mower that fired out the stone!

You damaged his car, you don't have insurance, and you don't care because hey, "c'est la vie"? confused

The bloke sounds like he over-reacted but there's three sides to everything and you don't come out of this well.

You really shouldn't be driving if you are pissed.

The funny thing is, the OP takes a "c'est la vie" attitude to damaging the guys car, but doesn't take the same "c'est la vie" attitude about having his arm grabbed after talking to the (understandably annoyed) guy, like a complete knob!

Hardly assault though.

Try prodding a Police officer in the chest with you finger several times and see what the charge will be! wink

Under the terms of the Law, laying even a single finger on someone without their permission is assault (and touch them in the wrong place and it become sexual assault!)

We all know the law's an arse smile

A very misleading thread title which should have read, "I threw grass all over the road and damaged a blokes car and the bugger grabbed my arm"
