Dissatisfaction over the commentary in F1 has been a permanent row in the last 20 years, F1 broadcasters insist on having a shouty wang professional journo as lead commentator for broadcastery-reasons but most of the fans all prefer ex drivers... most of us agree the coulthard/brundle last year of the beeb was a high point in commentary no?

The broadcasters are well aware of fan dissatisfaction with presenters and have ceded to it in the past- the beeb binning the awful legard and sky binning the bint georgie thompson - So why not please everyone and broadcast two pillocks as their shouty excitable main commentary for vapid drop in fans, then have a selectable b audio (this is easily technically possible I believe) with able minded grown up's commentating for the hardcore fans who appreciate it?

They could run an X-factor style audition show to find the best commentator among all the ex-F1 drivers who just can't break through that darned glass ceiling.

Re- use old Murray Walker commentaries. Sounds good and if it's got nothing to do with the race so what? It's not like anybody actually relied on him to follow the race now is it?

I'd pay money to be able to watch a GP without any commentary though

Let me know where you live and if you pay me enough, I'll come round and turn the volume down on your telly!!

Have Cassette Boy make a mashup of Murray Walker. I do think it's a real shame that F1 has never delivered on its promise. We should be able to switch between cameras ourselves in this day & age.

I think the motoGP online service gives you multiscreen so yes easily possible

Mind, I remember a few years back trying the "red button" when it offered onboard - all that happened was the TV went dead in the middle of a live race while the box ponderously loaded up some front menu from which you have to navigate find and load it. Didn't try that again.

I used to run the on-board stream on the tv and take the commentary from 5 live on the radio - with volume on in-car higher than radio.

Much more enjoyable to watch drivers applying their craft for several laps than swapping over all the time.

But you did miss some of the main incidents as a result as there were no re-plays etc.

At one point last year I was banned from the main TV so watched a race using my office computers.

Four 24" screens provided a surprisingly good experience from the BBC website - and Radio 5 live streaming commentary to go with the iPlayer TV pictures worked a treat.

Whats wrong with Brundle/Crofty? I thought they seem to work quite well together??

Would be a nice option to switch off the commentary on F1 as well as many other sports.

I think the BBC had selectable b audio with C-Beebies style commentary for some races

Crofty is obnoxiously loud and tries to convince the viewer he's an expert. I think Brundle is generally good but has his silly moments, but that's to be expected when he has to cover for a raging buffoon stood next to him.

I'm sure Scott Mills (Radio 1 DJ) was commentator on some football game or other on red button (he knows nothing about football), so an alternative commentator shouldn't be too hard for F1. Could leave them in blighty & save the cost of sending them around the world, too.

  • Edit- yes he did. It went down about as well as that Welsh bloke has on C4 hehe

What about an online service that allows anyone to commentate over any live sporting event?

Does your television receiving apparatus have a volume dial?

The only thing wrong with Brundle and Crofty is Crofty. He's completely clueless about racing and engineering. How he got the gig, I've no idea. There are several occasions per race where he's completely wrong about something and Brundle just lets it go because he's too classy to call Crofty out on air.

I think they should shuffle the shouty bloke off to the bar where he belongs and put Ant Davidson in the box with Brundle.

I'm surprised Sky haven't tried the Indycar/NASCAR model ie having three or four people in the booth. For the most part it works well especially in boring bits and I'd like Davidson to be used more. Maybe C4 could add Webber/Senna in the com box.

I'd rather not be sent to sleep midway through a race.

Speaking as someone who commentates at regional events - I'd have a bash at that
