Those magazine subscriptions

If this has been discussed before then I apologise but.....
Standing in line at WH Smithers today to purchase my Thunderer and a padded envelope (long story!) the FiF jaundiced eye ranged over some of the various tempting offers on display.
No not Big and Bouncy but these magazines which, if one believes the TV adverts, are all the rage.
Example; Build a radio controlled Spitfire, first issue £1.99 with free instructional video, subsequent 74 issues priced £6.99 (or similar unbelievable numbers you first think of)
Now I can honestly say that I have never seen a single person purchasing one of these, not just the Spitfire series, but any of them, the rally cars, model of Mary Rose, Watches, Dolls, Famous Pipe Smokers of Yorkshire 1900 - 1939, bla bla bla.
So while some inordinately complicated transaction was taking place at the till conducted between a person with a very strange haircut and the totally gormless salesperson I had an unfortunate amount of time to waste.
Enough time to establish that this particular branch of Smithers has no less than 23 different series of these particular periodicals on display. I can think of a couple more for which I have seen adverts but did not notice on the shelves.
Now I do realise that the majority of sales may be via subsription, thus allowing Spitfire subscribers the additional joy of their free portable windsock.
So is it me that is out of touch or are these publications such wonderful examples of literary and graphic art that I am denying my family the delights of Mr DeAgostini's products.

Although I have bought a couple of the first editions just for goody on them (rally car and motor bike )
Save your money and buy the complete item at the model shop or where-ever and a good book to read when you're fed up with making the kit up!

Most are a load of tosh if you ask me. There was one a year or so ago about building a radio control Subaru - lad was despirate (sp) that i got it till I explained that it would take him 2 years to build, cost over £300 + radio gear, and that his Tamya (sp) XB ould still be far better.
In the end we bought 4 copies of the £1.99 starter as the tyres were the right size to replace the worn out ones on the Tamya for less than 1/2 the price!

It always makes me chuckle when I see these adverts. I wonder how many of the magazines actually make it past the 2nd issue, or whether there's a whole bunch of people waiting a month at a time for their next piecerude-boy said:

Well done with the tyres, that was clever..should have done that myself!
The other thing with these kits are that you won't be able to get the spare parts if (and when) you break something..
it's a bit of a scam apparently, after I think it's 4months they stop supplying them to the shops and insist that the magazine will only be available mail-order from now on.
Apparently after another few months the magazine is stopped altogether citing high production costs and not enough readers...

Shoot me down, but I stupidly subscribed to the Radio Control one 18 months or so ago. I LOVE getting post, so the idea of a new mag every week appealed and it was only a fiver a go. However, when you subscribe, they send them in batches of 4 once a MONTH - Doh!
I did complete it in the end, but they then had the cheek to start sending additional issues which included upgrade parts - so it didn't stop after the 45, it carried on. A hurried phone call and it stopped. They also send you 'binders' every so often at £6 a pop - complained and had those stopped and refunded too.
At least the last few issues you get your monies worth and the car was 100% complete and quite well built. Not sure how it compares to the Tamiya models though. Daren't look really after the cost of it! Never again...

From what I hear, subscription to them is usually a Christmas present for someone, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are there, they just don't get sold over the counter.
