My first time posting on the PH forum or any forum for that matter. Wanted to discuss buying and selling cars as a side line. I recently got motor traders insurance after visiting a few auctions and researching the prices cars sold for at them. I visited around 8-10 auction houses to get an idea of prices and found a real mix, some auctions sold keenly priced cars and some auctions I left scratching my head wondering how traders managed to make any money.

In the end I got hold of a Mini Cooper S which I bought in the classified ads. It needed work so I got it tidied up and sold it for a good enough profit to keep me interested in buying and selling cars.

The main thing I wanted to discuss is an idea I have to advertise the vehicles. I would really like to make good videos of the cars, the kind of videos that really give a feel of the car in a way photos just can't. Can anyone give any advice on what would be needed to make some good car videos on a fairly short budget? I've looked at lots of different YouTube videos to get an idea but it would be good to get some other ideas. Is there anyone in the London are who has equipment (cameras/ drones maybe?) and would be able to help out? I really enjoy Chris Harris' work, Neil Carey is very good at what he does and the Petrolicious videos are wonderful. I have no idea what it would take to make something as good as those in terms of video quality (obviously I wouldn't be spanking a car I'm trying to sell on a track like CH, I'm talking about camera angles and editing etc).

Another thing I'd like to ask is if there any main dealer qualified technicians around in the London area. One of the reasons I could buy the Mini with confidence is because I know some very good BMW qualified techs who help me out with car maintenance on a private basis. I'd be interested to here from anyone from any kind of manufacturer background who would be interested in the extra work.

Lastly, I have read a few posts on this topic on the forums and my question wasn't really addressed in any previous threads but what often ends up getting discussed is tax and legal responsibilities as a motor trader. I'm well aware of both of those things and understand them so I'm not really looking for that kind of advice, thank you.

Bit of a long post I know, but it's been a burning question for a little while now. I'm a major car nut and have wanted to get involved in buying and selling cars for a long time. I've only just been able to get hold of traders insurance. It's nice knowing I can drive around in lots of different cars. If anyone wants advice on traders insurance, happy to help if I can (with my very limited knowledge).

Sorry I can't help with your questions, but out of interest, how much does your traders insurance cost if you're doing this on the side?

Jammy - My insurance costs about £2.5k per annum, £2.7k after interest because I'm paying instalments. That was the cheapest quote I could find. In terms of the variables, It's not too good for me. 24 years old, London. Although I do have 4 years NCB acquired from a private insurance policy which helped a bit. I can drive most cars under a value of £15k with the trade policy. It also covers my own personal car which helps. If you go for it you won't need a separate policy for your personal car. Happy to name the company but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to. There were two companies I found that were cheapish but there are many out there, a couple of afternoons on the phone and I'm sure you'll find something reasonable.

Mike - Thank you! I had to do a double take myself when I saw the 57 months, that can't be right. I can't believe it was almost 5 years ago I set up an account. I remember reading a readers car feature at the time about a guy who was young (19-24ish) and had a Porsche Boxster. I only set up to send him a message asking how he managed to insure it. Didn't get a response though... I'm long past the days of suffering with expensive insurance now, Scary that I'll be 25 soon though. I've never been good with social networking/ forums, don't have FaceBook or anything like that. I have the habit of keeping myself to myself I suppose.

I just wanted to get a few opinions on here and see what people thought. The TOTD feature last month on the guy who set up the car rental business was encouraging.
