Taking a new car on track. Warranty invalid?
Discussion
GAP will not cover you on track.
Warranty is more complex the official warranty documents states under exclusions "Damage or defects caused by improper use of the vehicle, neglect, or use of the vehicle for motor sports activities."
Some will argue trackdays are motor sports activities some will argue they are not, pick your poison and move on.

Ask your dealer and VW before you take it on track.
My Porsche is still under Porsche used car warranty and IS covered for track days, according to my OPC (dealer) taking your car on track is not only permitted by Porsche but it is encouraged.
Find out what VW's attitude is.
Ask your insurer if they will cover track days, some will. Some will ask for an additional payment, and some won't and you'll have to buy a separate policy.

Purchased outright or lease / HP? If financed then your terms and conditions will answer your question.
If you choose to ignore this and do it anyway cover up your registration number, working in the industry I tend to check our system for any interesting cars on track when I take the MX5 out to check if they're on our books or not if the reg numbers aren't hidden.

My current insurance is the years free insurance I got with the car which doesn't cover it on track.
Would seem a bit silly to have a GTI and then not take it on track. In fact part of the reason I have a new car is for the warranty so if it breaks they fix it!
With that mind set you'll soon find that isn't quite how most manufacturers warranties work.Would seem a bit silly to have a GTI and then not take it on track. In fact part of the reason I have a new car is for the warranty so if it breaks they fix it!
Also *insert obligatory track day RWD superiority comment here*

Meh can't see many rwd cars out there for the price I paid with 5 doors and seats and nigh on 200bhp and 236ib/ft of torque
E46 M3 can has a lot more power and torque than that and can be had for significantly less than a new Polo GTi...hell, even a Monaro can be had for less than a new Polo GTi! Both also have 4 seats...
£18k buys a LOT of used performance car if track days are your thing. Hell, even a ready prepared stock-hatch race car (Fiesta XR2, Peugeot 106 et al) can be had for less than £5k. One of those will run rings round the Polo.
If it's not on a finance deal (last thing you want is to be paying that off for years after some egit has t-boned you going into a corner!), by all means get some track insurance and give it a whirl.

I went through the whole deciding what car to get/buy new/buy used etc and thought it was best to buy something new that isn't going to cost the world in parts and general costs and that would also not need MOT's for three years and has warranty etc. £18k buys a LOT of used performance car if track days are your thing. Given that I maybe do three trackdays a year road manners were more important to me than anything else. I just sold a half decent 172 that would have been perfect for trackdays only but Ive just sold my house and don't have off street parking anymore (or the will to buy a tow car or pay for tax and insurance on a car I barely use)

I'm not speaking from experience but I'd be surprised if many manufacturers will honour a warranty claim if they find out you've been using the car on track. Take the plates off and don't tell them.
Yeah I think the plan will be to pay the finance off (which I only took for the £1400 discount) and get trackday insurance when I want to venture on track and just hide the plates and or evidence lolI worked at a BMW main dealer back in 2001/2002 - just when the e46 M3 came out.
There were even a few cars back then for which the warranty was not honoured, if it was found out to have been driven on a track.
Buy a 328 for £1,000 chuck on some suspension and you'll have loads more fun - nothing worse than trying to drive a car quickly with the thought at what if I prang it, at the back of your mind.

I'd suggest hiring one of Bookatrack's Caterham 7s for a track day in that case, or do an Experience Day where cars are provided. Would seem a bit silly to have a GTI and then not take it on track. In fact part of the reason I have a new car is for the warranty so if it breaks they fix it!
