...But why?

If you're shopping for something or looking to book a room at a hotel (as the article suggests) surely the intelligent among us will still use comparison websites to get the best deal / specify criteria? Why would you want to talk to a robot when you're already using a device capable of browsing the internet? Or is it that this is supposed to be 'faster'?

My company recently issued us all with iPads - great for presentations in front of customers etc. They also installed some software for dictation, so we could automatically make notes whilst out and about. Apart from the fact that, the dictation software can't input punctuation, so it makes some notes incomprehensive nonsense. I can't use it whilst driving because I have to press buttons to get to the stage where it will start recording correctly. So it's completely hopeless.

Or maybe I'm just getting old (I'm 27...)

I think they're looking for the next must-have method of communication that can get businesses etc to subscribe, it'll be taken over by inane rubbish and its only any good if it is the only method of communication, which it isn't and I doubt will be

I may just be getting old and cynical, but given how the internet seems to produce monopolies (think of a popular app and then try to think of the thirr, fourth and fifth most popular competitors), I expect that bots and Microsofts vision of AI as a PA will lead to a generation that view going online themselves to find a good deal in the same way that many today would view using DOS to install a new soundcard.
