This was new one for me, popped into Halfrauds to buy some oil and during the transaction they asked if I would like the receipt e-mailed to me?

I assume a different attempt to collect customers details and to spam your inbox as well...

I got this at Mothercare once, I just said no so they gave it to me, I assume it is a marketing ploy to get your email address.

Screwfix do this, I have no issues with it.

They keep a log of all your purchases against your 'account' so you don't need to find a receipt for warranty claims etc.

Sometimes you get money off codes through like £10 off when you spend over £50 etc.

It's a really good system if you're in trade and make lots of purchases. Better than trying to keep holds of paper receipts.

'Halfrauds' 'Spam' perhaps they are just trying to give customers what they want? Not everything in life requires a tin foil hat

I'd rather have this stuff emailed than have bits of paper

Halfords are the worst as they send you an insane amount of emails once they have your address. I quite like the email receipts from some places though that I regularly use. As already mentioned above it saves trying to keep pieces of paper for any return or warranty claim.

Charles Tyrwhitt do this - handy for returns and means I don't need to worry about remembering shirt style or collar/sleeve size, etc when I go in to get my latest set of work shirts

Screwfix always ask and I say no and get a paper one but it still seems to be automatically emailed anyway.
Haven't had any vouchers for ages, do they distinguish between private and business customers??? smile

I also did this with Halfords last week. I have an email account that I use for none important stuff so if it gets spammed, I'm not concerned. It's seperate from my work and personal account. So far, the only thing they have sent through is the receipt but time will tell...

I'm sure there is legislation to prevent a company spamming you unless you specifically opt in to receive the st.

We've had it [email receipt request] a couple of times and I think it's great not having to fanny about with paper receipts. Ultimately, it's just an extension of the convenience of online shopping.

If you don't like spam don't ever buy anything online at Euro Car Parts or Machine Mart, I've had syphilis that was easier to shake off.

Came here to say exactly this. If you're concerned just check with them that it's just the receipt, not a marketing tactic. Happy to be corrected, but if they're going to use the email address for anything else they'd need your permission beforehand (hence the 'tick here' boxes on online forms).

I understand it can be convenient but what happens when they have collected enough details and the database starts to have a significant financial value. Then you get a change to the T&C's about sharing with 'carefully selected partners' i.e. anyone with money and your inbox is 100% spam.

Either that or Halfrauds get hacked, database gets nicked but the result is the same except Halfrauds don't make any money..

Argos do this too.

"Customers love it because they feel reassured that they have a record of purchases without cluttering up their wallets, and colleagues appreciate the benefits which enable them to provide an even more convenient service to customers.”

If you've ever previously bought something from the same retailer online, they obviously already have your email address. So if they have it, there's not much of a problem letting them send a copy of a receipt. If you need to give them an email address at the till, then it's probably not worth the effort. wobble

I like it. Easier than keeping a stack of receipts.

Just set up a household email account and have them all sent there.

No, generally either convenience or part of a corporate social responsibility exercise around paper. A lot of people now actively prefer it so offering the choice is generally seen as a good thing.

My Gmail spam filter is impressive, and my work filter is virtually bullet-proof.

Meh.
