I don't know Inverness, usually just passing though on my way to somewhere else. But can anyone recommend anywhere in or near the city centre where we can sit & and enjoy some decent food and drink?

I like:

http://www.cafe1.net

and

http://www.rivarestaurant.co.uk

for a smarter meal. If you are less fussed about a fancy location then Aspendos is superb IMO:

http://www.highlandaspendos.co.uk

Enormous portions of good food and if you like that sort of Turkish/Med grill food you won't be disappointed.

Others rate the Mustard Seed:

I've been but can't remember anything about it so must not have stood out for me somehow. Don't remember it being bad certainly.

Also, Rocpool reserve is meant to be superb but I can't vouch for it as I've never been:

They're all in the centre or in Riva's case, just across the river...

In addition to the suggestions above which are all good. Castle Tavern is good for pub grub and the White House serves a nice lunch.

http://www.riverhouseinverness.co.uk/ is very nice.

The white house is also very good, usually a toss up between these two when we go out.

Thanks everyone for those suggestions, they all look pretty good. Just need to run the menus by Mrs IanB.

I can vouch for the Rocpool, I've eaten in the restaurant there (Chez Roux, owned by one of the Roux family) twice and stayed in the hotel itself once. Quality is superb as you'd expect.

2nd for The Mustard Seed.

The White House is great for cocktails. Most upmarket bar in Inverness by a country mile.
