What first DSLR should I buy?
Discussion
Hi all!
This probably happens a lot around here so I'll try make it easy.
I'm currently looking at buying a Canon 60D and a Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
I can probably get both of those for around £450
I'm not completely new to photography and am not afraid of Lightroom, but I've never ventured into buying a DSLR.
For now I'm looking at a general lens that I can take on holiday (I'm going on honeymoon in a month) but if I'm enjoying it I'll probably start to fondle other lenses in future.
Is there any other combination I should be looking at for that price range?

I know I am not answering your specific question but my first thought was why you want a DSLR?
This.In a month's time you'll still be looking up in the manual what the auto-fresnel-synchro-ASA button does to the sequence of the penta-reflex-coupling-thread.
Why have that hassle on an otherwise nice holiday .... ?
Agree with the above. I've just bought a Sony A6300 after having Canon SLRs for years and apart from your obvious ISO shutter speed aperture settings I'm lost in the menus. Wouldn't fancy trying to capture key moments with it on a honeymoon whilst learning how to use it.
Also depending on where you're going an SLR might end up being left at the hotel a lot where a compact like a Canon Gx could fit in your pocket. You could still shoot everything raw with one of those too and fiddle with images as much as you want when you get home when you've got time to learn stuff

Thanks, I kinda knew these responses were coming.
I have a S120 which I will have with me too which still takes great photos. I would also like the DSLR for the future too, not just the holiday (it's just a good excuse for a new camera). I am aware of the learning curve and will no doubt be a bit slower than usual but I don't think it will be too bad, I'm going on quite a relaxing holiday.

Might be worthwhile considering the 760D, take a look at this comparison site: http://cameradecision.com/compare/Canon-EOS-60D-vs...
If you want to buy new then please note that DigitalRev are selling the Canon 760D with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens kit for £489.00
For less money you can pick up a Canon EOS 700D with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Kit for £389.00, this is the one that I have and am mighty pleased with, though I did also buy a 50mm f1.8 lens and a 24mm f2.8 lens for use at classic car shows. Am now pondering over whether to buy a 10-18mm lens or the older 10-22mm lens. So many choices!!!

My opinion:
A 60D and 15-85mm would make a great starter kit. It's as basic or advanced as you'll need, and that's a good lens. If you've large hands, like I do, a smaller bodied camera can be a pain.
As far as I'm aware, the 5D classic isn't an option, as you won't get the body AND a walk around lens for £500.

....would Sir like a D5 and a 200-400mm f/4 AFS?Oh yes please! And don't bother wrapping it - I'll drive it away!

Sir would quite like a D500, but for various reasons beyond the scope of this forum is not feeling as flush as he should be.
That's quite a poor attitude. After all if you keep it 100 years it *might* become a valuable antique. (It will certainly become an antique.) Think of it as an investment.....
I have the Canon 1200d that came with the std kit but also a 55 - 300 telephoto. Think it cost around 300 and came with a bag and a memory card (thanks, Currys!)
It's great. Suits me fine. I'm sure there's better spec cameras out there but I always think if I upgrade the body I'll just become lazy. Get some prime lens on there and you'll be flying.
Had a chance to pick up a 7d recently and decided against it because A; the sensor is exactly the same and B; it'll, as before, just make me lazy.
I think a few more years with the baby 1200, concentrate on being a better photographer, then I'll consider an all singing all dancing body. Or ditch the lot and go full frame.
