Car photo inspiration (inc. locations)
Discussion
I'm 4 weeks into ownership of my new toy and want to get some good photos of it.
I'm after some technical inspiration:
- How best to shoot the car at night? Ideally in backlit city scene (London).
- How to get a good night-time interior shot?
- The above whilst driving + light trails?
Location inspiration:
- Any tips for London locations where once dark/late its quiet/safe enough to go and photo? Canary Wharf?
Kit wise I have a 600D (with kit lenses) and a RX100 plus Gorilla Pods.

Hi Matt,
London can be fun & games after dark, but it can also work extremely well!
If you want backlit at night, you'll need some of your own lighting. You'll need a tripod and to nail the exposure, it's a fairly simple case of experimenting with aperture / shutter speeds.
Night time interior. Tricky - you'll need light. Sometimes the cars own interior lighting works well, but it's worth seeking out areas where you'll get external light into the car anyway.
To do interior whilst driving is pretty advanced, so I assume you have the correct apparatus (a rig or camera mount of some description). Again, exposures will be hugely affected by the ambient light, and if you use anything to light the interior as well. Just experiment.
In terms of locations, London is simply too huge and full of potential locations to just reel off a list - but I would avoid CW as the security is pretty jumpy there. City is fine as it's public, and it's quiet in the evening (unless you're shooting outside a bar!).
Have fun.
cheers,
Steve
