Picked my dad up yesterday from there and was really annoyed by the (mis)use of a camera van. Is it possible to complain to the local camera van partnership or is it just a waste of time? I thought they had to be located at known accident blacks pots etc?
This one is parked up in a 40mph zone on the last approach road to the airport, tucked into a hidey hole and facing traffic. The road is barely used and has no houses or business on there and has a clear line of sight to the airport.
It's obvious with it being a newish empty road that people will press on a bit.
There is nothing to suggest it's anything more than a cash hotspot.
I have no objections whatsoever to them covering known trouble spots or crash sites. I didn't get caught as it happens I was just plodding at 40 in my 4x4 but it all seems a bit unfair and targeted there to catch people maybe rushing to pick up or drop off. Flights are very infrequent there it's not like Gatwick etc!

Best you can do is report it here so others with speed camera alerts set up will know about it.

Thanks for the heads up though, my parents use the airport for their hols so I can let them know about the scamera van.

The location is perfect too for opening up the car having just come off the newly opened link road to get to it, literally no traffic around so you'd tend to pick up speed in a decent car.
He was obviously awaiting the plane landing too as he disappeared within ten mins of me picking up my father.

Let me disabuse you of that notion.

They can be located wherever the authorities wish, and are usually placed where people are exceeding speed limits. As the speed camera haters never tire of claiming, most accidents do not involve people exceeding speed limits, therefore it would be pointless placing them at accident black spots.

What's the basis of your complaint?

We don't have to stick to accident black spots. If we know of a particular route where speeding is consistent we will go and enforce it.

Whatever made you think they were only used at accident black spots? You'll be telling us you thought they were aimed at reducing accidents next.

They are not. They are aimed at encouraging people not to speed and catching people who do speed.

Was it definitely a speed camera van, or was it VCS capturing regs to send speculative invoices to?

This is Liverpool Airport https://goo.gl/maps/4nCfQN2TLWq where they charge people £100 for waiting to get through the barriers at the car rental return. The red lines on the road are purely decorative and have no legal standing. Similarly, Liverpool Airport is not relevant land in the scheme of POFA 2012, but that doesn't stop VCS from sending out invoices.

Google Maps hasn't been updated at RHD for a while, but the MO is the same.

The OP's post appears to give justification for it being there on those grounds, "It's obvious with it being a newish empty road that people will press on a bit." Perhaps too many people have done just that.

I like those sort of stressful situations, miss plane or too eager to collect Granny? Pay us £100 quid and have three points!

Its perfectly legal as has been pointed out many times (just like there are many people who could speed down there and never be caught or have an exemption) but its just a bit cynical with it interpretation of human nature.

its a speed van, and according to the brother in law (taxi driver) its a common occurrence for them to sit there half hour either side of the (non frequent) plane landings.

so my objection is on the grounds of revenue generation rather than anything else. yes speeding is speeding, i accept the arguments, i probably mistakenly thought they had to have justifcation ie accident reduction etc.
if you saw the location, and the fact there are no footpaths pedestrians etc etc maybe you'd appreciate the frustrations.

So your argument is with the speed limit, not the camera van. What speed limit do you think would be appropriate, and have you thought about taking any steps to get it changed?

Get enough people to complain and they may just change it. Rare I know, but they did do it on the A16 coming in to Grimsby Now a 40MPH when previously had been 30MPH

I don`t know if his argument is about the limit. However, its not in keeping with the spirit of the law and human nature, rather, its in keeping with the letter of the law and using human nature as means of "authorities" earning more revenue.

Roll on when all these speed vans are obsolete and consigned to history as they will one day!

Wrong I'm afraid. The spirit of the law in this case is that people should not drive above the speed that is set for the road they are on.

If people don't want to contribute to this 'revenue', which is barely worth the effort of collecting it, and in many cases isn't, then all they need to do is to not speed.

correct its not about the limit, it is indeed the spirit of the law and human nature. yes its perfectly legal no doubt, but why have we allowed it to descend to this level where it cant be just about fining people for revenue.
its not a dangerous area or road, and it appears to be targeted at busy (for that road) times when planes are in/out

IOW, they are doing it when the most people are likely to be caught speeding. Of course they do that, those camera vans are expensive. I expect when that road isn't busy they will go somewhere else that is.

Are we really that bothered if they do though?

I'm not, but then I'm not the person or organisation that chooses when and where to place the van. Nor do I know why the 40 limit was chosen. There may be reasons that are not readily apparent.

There are no end of pointless obstructions being put in place these days which appear to have no sound reasoning and only serve to needlessly slow down progress and cheese you off.
Like all the entrances to roundabouts that used to be two lanes and now some pillock(s) has taken it upon himself to paint solid white lines on the road and made one lane off-limits, thereby pointlessly slowing everyone up and frequently creating queueing at those roundabouts that didn't exist before.
