Silicon baking sheets

The most mundane of questions, but Sister D came home with some amazon Silicone baking sheets and I just can't bring myself to cook items on a sheet which feels and looks like rubber. Does anyone else use these? They say they are safe up to 480F but what happens after that?

Used extensively in professional kitchens, albeit the full size ones, known as silpat sheets.
Great for baking on as long as you take the item off to cool as they do cause baked products to sweat, ie trap steam.
Also really good for doing sugar or chocolate work on as you can peel the sheet off the sugar or chocolate rather than trying to lift them off.
The silicon is layered over a fibreglass mesh so they're pretty tough.

We've got one at home, the few times the wife has used it to cook oven chips they've always tasted a bit odd, gone back to a metal tray for those.
Got lots of silicon things for baking though, i.e. cake moulds, flan cases, etc. The other one I don't like is a silicon loaf tin we have, you cook any cakes in that and they spread as it isn't rigid enough.

We've got one as well. The OH sometimes uses it as a liner for baking pans when cooking items like oven chips or chicken Kievs. Never noticed that they taste the food.
Tesco (maybe others too) sell a thin disposable version which can be re-used a few times. We put one on the bottom of the oven, there isn't an element below, and replace it every so often.
