It was good but the builders just a part of the assembly line. I didn't notice him measuring and checking things or carrying out adjustments. That said, I didn't watch all of it.

In a similar way, Corvette invite buyers to 'build' their own LS7 engines but really the machinery does it all. The customer presses a lot of the buttons.

^Anybody, even semi unskilled could build that with the correct training just as long as the components were to 'average' specifications. It's just repetition.

...and all the bolts torqued to preset values by microprocessor control too - all the guy has to do is make sure the tool hits the bolt head and press the button.

As you say - pretty much anyone can put together an engine ... It's not exactly difficult. (I agree that very few of us have the facilities to do it but that's a different matter) but to actually fettle an engine to get the very best out of it on a one off basis is quite different.

Uniformity has a place in the world - god love it because otherwise we'd never get spares - but I'd love to have the knowledge to properly understand how to eek the best out of an engine.

(25 years ago I had a naked Rover V8 out of an old P6 in the garage just so I could start it up and listen to it! I've always loved that sound... )

I've done exactly the same. Hearing the rumble and getting a kick is akin to banging a loud drum and making the biggest noise you can. Must be some sort of primitive instinct.
