I recently went to the dentist after many years of not going. My teeth are pretty good surprisingly but the dentist said I have an advanced case of bruxism 'tooth grinding'.

I've apparently ground my enamel down down and what's left is 7 times softer so it's down hill from now on.......i'm 47 years old.

The (private) dentist said that I could wear a mouth guard type thing during the night but to get one made is about 500 quid for a piece of plastic ?

I mentioned about those rugby mouthguard type things but he said about bacteria being trapped in it during the night.

In true PH fashion I am sure one could be trimmed/adapted but on a serious not he said it doesn't hold your jaw in the right place during the night.

Any serial bruxism'ists out there.

Off to grind for the night......

I wish I could charge £500 for a splint, I could go home at lunchtime!

If it is a simple splint to prevent further wear then on the good old NHS its under £100 but thats private dentistry (though a lot of the time I am unconvinced the private treatment is much different). If its not causing any muscular problems or problems with the joint itself then more or less its a glorified piece of plastic that wears instead of your teeth as its softer. Well worth doing to prevent further wear.

Hi, thanks for responding.

Not sure what you mean when you say ' its 100 pound on the NHS but thats private dentistry' ?

Can I join my local NHS dentist and get it done for £100 ?

Private dentists set their own prices. You could move but then maybe you wont like whoever you get. You could also negotiate with your current dentist. Prices are massively influenced by your location, the more populated an area the larger the average.

Just seems if its to prevent further wear that £500 is quite steep. I may only pay £50 to get a splint like this made, and its not £450 in time (two short appointments) or materials.

Sorry for this slow reply, my keyboard has died.

Well I'm currently in Palma, Majorca, and a Danish dentist here was recommended by a few. After discussing things I've just had the moulds taken, pick up the guard next week.

Total cost for it all is 220 Euros - about a third of the price originally quoted so pleased with that.

I am afraid I would have to disagree with Snapping. An accurately adjusted and well fitting hard appliance will require multiple visits and I know of dentists charging between 500-900 , the 900 being a dentist who has a special interest in TMD. The total time involved including review appointments will be around 2 hours. The soft splint Snapping refers to is a crude appliance that most dentists charge around £90 for but are largely ineffective and can actually intensify clenching/grinding. I would look into an "NTI" style appliance which is small and sits on the front four teeth and disengages various muscles, making it impossible for your teeth to contact and is much better at breaking the clenching habit. Usually cost around 200-300.

The silly NHS banding system would see you paying 233.70 for any appliance, soft or hard, so most dentists give their NHS patients the option of having a soft splint made for the £90 I mentioned before. Hope this helps.

You dentist sounds like a robber . I use a night guard , made to measure from a mould by my dentist , perfect fit , no problems with cleaning it just use a sterident tablet or similar in warm water for 10 mins each morning .

Been there done that.

I've used this brand for years, product is called 'StressGard'

Site - http://www.totalgard.com/

Link to buy from eBay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/StressGard-Night-Tooth-Tee...

Job jobbed.... Just give it a clean every few days (dunk in boiling water, and a small brush), and you're golden.

HTH.
