How long are yours?

I am talking wheel studs! I started to change my wheel studs today so that I can fit my hubcentric spacers. However the studs supplied are supposedly 25mm longer than standard but at 60mm are only 15mm longer than the original 45mm studs. The spacers are 20mm so I am loath to lose the 5mm of engagement. I just wondered if TVR fitted longer studs than Ford used? I can uy a set of 63mm but his wold also probably mean pulling the rear hubs to fit them.

Mick you are right and I was going to fit the longer studs. But 5mm reduction in free length reduces the number of nut turns from 14.5 to about 12 (12.5 to 10 on the locker) and I think that this would reduce the thread engagement from about 24mm to 19mm. Those figures are rough measurements. So, I will probably go for even longer studs but that means pulling the rear hubs as it has drums.

Those should still be fine Tony, imho.

stud should go into nut minimum of 1.5 times diameter, 12mm stud = 18mm of thread engagement or approx 12 turns (1.5mm pitch).


If you have closed nuts be careful you don't go too long on the studs and have then bottom out rather than tighten.

this is the ratio we've always worked to - or at least 1.5 threads passed the nut.

It's the same on aircraft. Plus any more than two threads protruding past the nut is unnecessary weight, resulting in decreased payload capacity and an increase in fuel consumption.

As always, thank you for the advice. It is difficult when your nuts are closed because you cannot see how much is sticking out.... I will fit the 60 mm studs but will torque check the nuts every day to see if there is a problem.
