Is this just me? Are shirts just poorly made from thin material or have I got particularly 'razor-esque' elbows?!

For my entire working life I've had to buy shirts with alarming frequency because they keep splitting at the elbows over time. I've tried Debenhams, TM Lewin, Savile Row and always had the same problem over time.

I bought 5 shirts at TM Lewin in October, and just found this morning that one of those has gone, that's in addition to another which went last week, so 2 out of the 5 I bought 6 months ago need replacing already!

I would switch to short sleeve shirts but I really don't like them!

So before I go back to TM Lewin with another wad of cash in hand, can anyone recommend an alternative/solution/shirt repair service?!

Or roll your sleeves up when you are at your desk to give that air of "knuckling down to some serious work". Thats how i roll. As does David Cameron.

Never.

I normally get too thin or fat for them, or just decide I don't like them.

Not just you.

I've gone through the elbows on loads of shirts and jumpers.

Me too, I have long arms and sharp elbows.

Buy cheap shirts (I prefer Charles Tyrwhitt) and replace often.

I do this - I think it's because I lean on my desk with my elbows a lot.

Didn't your mum ever tell you to keep your elbows off the table? Your sedentary desk job is the culprit. Move your keyboard and mouse closer to your chair, so that your elbows aren't on the desk. It'll hep your posture too, because you'll be using your back to hold you upright, not your arms.

God, I sound like a sanctimonious ... frown

Order your shirts with an extra length sleeve, so they are not so tight at the elbow.

Try the Saville Row Shirt Co ( on Line). They offer this service on selected shirts.

Yep, used to go through one every few months. At least it meant I had a regular rotation of new shirts....

Yes and here. I don't buy cheap but always cotton or wool. Jumpers go shinny at the elbows first and then eventually wear through.

Always seems to be worse on the left elbow. Think that is the one I rest on at work at a lot. Desk napping etc.!

You have 40 year old shirts? wink

I used to wear them out too. It's your elbows on the desk that do it.
Buy new shirts and adjust how you sit at your desk.

Never gone through a shirt but I always go through the left elbow of jumpers which I'm sure is due to leaning on my desk.
