This afternoon I got an email from HMRC about a Self Assessment Tax Return. It says I'm owed £217.33 and to claim it via the Government Gateway. Thing is though I'm a PAYE employee, so why am I getting a Self Assessment Tax Return email? I created a Government Gateway account a few years ago so I could reclaim some tax I was due, but I chucked the card a few weeks ago as I forgot about the tax a reclaimed a few years ago. I've tried to find out what my account ID is, but have been unable to due to needing a ten digit number which I don't have. Is there another way for me to find out what my account ID is?

Very unlikely HMRC will send an email saying your owed an amount. Normally the email just says an email has been sent to your gov account log on to read it.

Much more likely to be a phishing email.

Hover your mouse over the link in the email, what comes up at the bottom of your browser? I don't think it will be a .gov website...

Scam. HMRC send you a letter telling you they have reviewed your tax liability & how they have arrived at your refund. You then get a cheque a couple of days later. I am PAYE & tend to get mine later in the year (Q3) after my employer has sent them my P11D with the details of my car & other jollies so the robbers can work out how much to tax me on to give it to the feckless & work shy.

Its a scam. If you call HMRC, whilst you wait in their call queue they tell you they will never Email you asking for details or tell you about a rebate via Email.

Whilst we're on this subject. Ive just logged in to the HMRC website and its telling me I need to setup my 2 step verification again. Despite the fact Ive been used the service for awhile and it texts me a code to enter once Ive put in my UTR and password. Is that normal? Of course theyre very busy now on the phone.........

I did think it might be a scam as previously I'm sure I got a letter and I didn't have to do anything to claim it.

I received an email with the exact same 'refund' due of £217.33 on an old email address today coincidentally enough. Other than the fact that it's clearly a scam, the 'ellectronically - CARD' refund method gave the game away (spelling mistake intended).
