I might be a miserable sod. But websites like go fund me annoy me. Basically people asking for money to fund things most people would have to pay for themselves.

Of course there are some campaigns thats do deserve help and money.

But for example this one I spotted on Facebook.

https://www.gofundme.com/c8zwu6t8

I know its sad and freak accident.surly this is what travel insurance is for.

They have not spoken to the doctor or the family member yet but already started to ask for money.

I spotted another one asking for $150k to support them getting to get to Rio 2016

https://www.gofundme.com/taz2ksck

So basically if you want something now you don't need to go out and work or it just ask others to pay.

Not really the website's fault. A bit like saying Google annoys you because you don't agree with the contents of a website it lists in its search result.

Phonetically speaking, the perfect user to respond.

Your first example I agree, this is why you take adequate holiday cover to go abroad.

The athlete (kind of) wanting people interested in her sport to donate to her costs of competing in the Olympics seems to me to be just what gofundme was intended for. I'd much rather it was down to the athletes to be crowd funded by people that choose to give to them than having the elite ones funded from taxes.

Ok maybe not the website but certain users. But the website is set up to allow people to post basically anything they want to be given money for.

A friend recently set one of these up for her daughter which initially irritated the grumpy git inside me but quickly gave way to acceptance. She set up the fund to allow her teenage daughter to go off to South America to volunteer and get involved in building homes, water or some such things, something which on the face of it I'd like to do too (but, like her, can't afford to get there). Initially I thought it was akin to begging for money and was annoyed by this blatant "Ooh, give me money so I can go globe trotting", but after being irritated by my irritation, I figured that given the circumstances on which this girl would be travelling, such an opportunity could only come by people crowd funding the travel, and its unlikely she'd be out doing the touristy things but instead actually working, hard.

If people asking for funding annoys you, it's best not to look on funding websites or click the adverts. hehe

Sob story about needing a car to open up more job opportunities to help support family - at least a vaguely noble cause, maybe if a few of their mates got together they could scrape a few hundred quid together to get something with a year's MOT that would do the job...

What's that? They want £10,000? rofl

After driving 13 years and earning decent money the most expensive car I've ever owned cost less than half of that!

Reminds me of that young couple who thought it was a good idea to lauch a website asking people to give them £1 towards buying a house. It ended up with loads of people offering him £50 to shag his Missus IIRC.

Gordon Baird donated £80.
Sounds like an incredibly powerful Pistonheader.

Difficult with athetes. On one hand if they were good enough to compete at that level they should have lottery funding and/or sponsorship. On the other plenty of sports have had their funding cut leaving talented people with no hope of getting there.

This is really common in Triathlon. An expensive sport to compete in and one where most of the amateurs and AG athletes earn more than the pros. There is little funding for it (despite British success). The joke is you can tell the pros as they are the ones with the go fund me (or similar) account. Its hard to know if you are helping someone achieve their ambitions and goals and contributing to a future medal winner, or financing some weekend warriors' £8K carbon fibre TT bike.

Erm. Normally, a competitor would get sponsorship. If she's having trouble getting that (networking/contacts) then I think gofundme is a valid way of doing this compared to getting funding because you can't be bothered with home insurance.

I might try it. "My home insurance is due in the next month. I need to raise £256 by 15th May 2016." biggrin

A friend of mine had his car vandalised a couple of months back. Some toerag keyed every panel.
He mentioned on a car related Facebook group, not asking for money, but just sharing what had happened.
Several people offered to help him financially to get it sorted.
He set up a gofundme page as a way of people getting the money to him.

I'm with you I was going to start a thread in this.

Sports activities or doing something to benefit others I don't have a problem with. The everyday things that should be self funded like weddings, car insurance I do.

Wasn't there a bloke who crashed his/his dad's M3 and then had the cheek to "crowd fund" a new one?
