Late morning today just before the northbound tollbooths, 6 assorted marked and unmarked police cars pulled speeders (I presume) on the hard shoulder. 2 more waiting on previous entry slip. Glad I was heading south.....

Good allocation of stretched resources there then.

Especially when the M6 Toll Rd accident rate is less than half that of the M6

Could be uninsured/untaxed/unlicensed drivers being pulled.

If so, good, always glad to see people like that being nicked.

I think they're ANPR traps - seen them on the M6 toll, but also in other parts of the Midlands.

I do often see unmarked cars having stopped cars on the hard shoulder though - it's probably one of the worst places to speed in terms of how easy it is for the Police to pick people out.

With that many cars involved, including marked and unmarked cars, it sound to Me as though they were carrying out a training exercise (T-pack for example), more than setting up a speed trap.

One thing leading to another probably - ANPR traps are common on the Toll, which means that there are unmarked cars around to do the stops ... which means there's a good chance that the (numerous) speeders are going to go blatting past one whilst it's minding its own business.

Speeding is clearly worse than one of those, and at least as bad as the other two. Unlike any of the above, it causes DIRECT casualties, and plenty of them.

Uninsured would be much less of a problem without dangerous driving, of which speeding is a major component. Driving an untaxed car does not endanger people any more than dodging inheritance or income tax. And I would rather share the road with an unlicensed non-speeding driver than a licensed speeding one. At least the former has a chance of stopping in time, whereas the latter is of course constrained by the laws of physics, which even PHers haven't yet found a way of disobeying.

Despite fashionable opinion, wishful thinking and endless stupid posts here, speed DOES kill, speeding IS dangerous, and good people don't do it, END OF STORY. The motorway speed limit should be reduced to 50mph.

Nope - 'speeding' on the M6 Toll is indeed common because its a clear well maintained road and the arbitrary limit is far too low. The rate of accidents there is very low ergo speeding is a technical infringement with NOTHING to do with safety. I think you swallowed the whole scam industry propaganda book AND believed it. Better off thinking thing through a bit more....

Un-insured is a potential issue as I think it may link to other negligence of a more criminal nature and perhaps defects to the vehicle (an actual potential safety issue). Gives the innocent a huge potential issue if said perp hits them too. Tax? Pffff should have been abolished Looooong ago. Co2 bks.

There's a reasonable amount of truth in that particularly if you add "Excess" to your speed kills/is dangerous. Your last sentence is trolling bks though.

50mph on a motorway in torrential rain and standing water is excess speed.

25mph past a school at pickup time is excess speed.

You cannot set a speed limit based on the highest risk scenarios, we'd be doing 30mph on motorways! Nor can you set it based the lowest risk. So there will be times when you can exceed the limit and be safe, this is not excess speed. As you said dangerous driving is the problem, sometimes that's due to excess speed. Sometimes it's due to lack of concentration, not enough stopping distance, poorly maintained vehicles. Better education and training are what is needed to reduce incidents of dangerous driving.

Statistically uninsured drivers break more laws and have more accidents than insured ones

If you do a 50 mile journey at 50MPH you're twice as likely to have an accident than if you drive at 100MPH as you're on the road for twice the time. Fact.
