I have just slightly upgraded my front brakes, to 260mm rotors. My thanks to Phillpot for providing the scarce caliper carriers needed.
I now have a pair of standard calipers going spare, these were Big Red new items and have only done about 2000miles and are working fine. If there is anybody out there who needs them for a restoration then please PM me. drink

I also have a spare pair of front standard caliper sliders if anyone needs them, they are shot blasted and painted red in very good unused condition.
Here's a couple of pics of my front upgrade and rear disc conversion

May I ask where you got your braided brake lines or did you make them up yourself?

Cheers

No, mine had new hoses pretty recently but I will upgrade some time. If anybody has the original hoses on then I suggest they do a couple of tests. With the hose on the car get someone to apply the brakes and hold the pipe, if there is any evidence of expansion then that is where the pressure is going. With the hose off clamp one end in a vice, clamp a vice grip to the other and see if you can stretch it, if there is any stretch then ditto. We were able to detect both on my old hoses, changing the hoses made far more difference than any other upgrade.

I did however do an engineering calculation of the effects of upgrading to 260mm and there was clearly a useful advantage both in initial braking power and the ability of the disc to absorb heat. At the same time I could keep the compliance and handling advantages of the standard 15" relatively high profile wheels/tyres and be sure the cooling of the discs was not compromised and have a minimal effect on the unsprung weight or gyroscopic effect from heavier discs. I was also pretty sure the change in front rear brake balance was within the ability of the standard balance valve to compensate. What a geek!!! nerdwhistle
Having now done some proper brake tests with them on I am happy the results are as expected. In addition the pads and discs are still readily available service parts.

Anyway, what is more important is that there are more votes for red nowclap so I must be right!!

Agreed Mick, what with routing inside and regular damage, getting them made up would have been prohibitively expensive. Never had on fail scrutineering or fail in use.....except when 'tested' by a bloody great rock or tree stump! Modern 1mm slitting discs make the cutting a lot easier. Cutting them with a disc fitted to the end of a battery drill on a cold wet night wasnt quite as much fun was it?

A luvverly pair indeed Joe! wink

But I couldn't help noticing that you have one red nipple and one silver nipple.

Does this cause any problems in day-to-day use? I ask because I'm due to be sharing a room with Phillpot sometime this year and I'd like to be prepared for any eventuality. I'm presuming the silver one is actually stainless?

As standard, the brakes on mine were nowhere near balanced and the car was distinctly tail happy under heavy braking. I've noticed similar symptoms in other V8Ss that I've been in on track. Going up to 285mm on the front improved the brake balance as well as improving heat dissipation and pedal feel. I wouldn't recommend going any further than that without addressing the brake balance, but small increases in front disk size retaining similar calipers is probably going to be a good move.
