I have a 1986 280i S2 with the radiator and condenser in the nose. Thinking of removing the condenser to expose the radiator more. Theory being, better air flow over the rad equals better cooling The AC is in-op so I shan't miss it. Anyone know how easy this is and the best way to do it?.

Did this on my Cerbera when the AC pump seized, improved air flow to rad

For what it's worth (2 cents), I added the condenser back in anticipation of re-oping the a/c and didn't notice any problems with it running hotter although I also fitted a lower rated fan switch (90c - 80c) Grady

So pulled the condenser this afternoon, and the rest of the AC stuff under the bonnet. With all that stuff gone the engine is much easier to work on. Biggest bh was getting the front spoiler off to drop the condenser out. I'd say the condenser covered around 80% of the radiator, so now it's gone I'm pretty sure flow to the radiator will be greatly improved.

I did a quick test in the garage and the fans feel as if they are pulling more air through.

Do you have the 30lb bracket that holds the compressor? I don't need one anymore but someone adding back A/C might.

It's still on there Grady. I'm looking for a new bracket now. I'll be keeping all the AC stuff in a box. I like to keep all the original bits with the car, even ones that I consider obsolete. Just in-case a later owner wants to put it back to factory original. Although I don't understand the need for AC in a convertible, plus the system fitted was pretty pathetic. A FHC is a different matter.

My general plan to replace the original unit with a Vintage Air (or similar) unit. Not having a/c in the summer down here is not much fun. And summer starts in May and goes until October.

After a test run of about 40 miles in 65 degree temp, I think it was definitely worth pulling off the condenser. Motorway temps are a little lower but it's at the lower speeds you notice the difference. Much cooler. The fan pulls the temp down quicker too.
